Volkswagen has marked a significant milestone in automotive history by celebrating the 50th anniversary of its iconic Golf model with a breathtaking event in Cappadocia, Turkey. The celebrations took to the skies with a specially designed hot-air balloon, symbolizing the enduring legacy of the Golf—a car that has shaped the automotive landscape for five decades.
On Sunday, September 1st, just after dawn, the Volkswagen ’50 Years of Golf’ hot-air balloon ascended into the Cappadocian skies, joining hundreds of other balloons in the region’s world-renowned dawn spectacle. The Sultan Series PH-370 balloon, which took off from the picturesque Love Valley, was flanked by an original Golf Mk I and the newly launched, significantly revised Golf Mk 8. This visual tribute to the Golf’s storied history was witnessed by thousands of tourists who gather daily to experience Cappadocia’s ‘bucket-list’ balloon attractions.

The event, which forms part of Volkswagen’s broader celebrations of the Golf’s 50-year journey, saw a select group of global media take to the skies in the commemorative balloon. The media representatives also had the unique opportunity to test drive every generation of the Golf, from the original Mk I, penned by legendary designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, to the latest Mk 8. This immersive experience highlighted the Golf’s evolution over the decades while staying true to the original design philosophy that debuted in 1974.
Mike Orford, Head of PR and Communications at Volkswagen UK, expressed the significance of the event: “The Golf is celebrating a major milestone this year—a phenomenal 50 years of production. So what better way to celebrate such a significant moment than with a sky-full of giant birthday balloons? Very few manufacturers can claim to have such an iconic model that has evolved and innovated over eight generations, so we thought it was definitely something worth celebrating in style.”
With over 37 million units sold globally across eight generations, the Golf remains Volkswagen’s best-selling car to date. It has not only defined its own model segment but also set the benchmark within that class, embodying a blend of timeless design, innovative technology, and consistent evolution. The Cappadocia event serves as a fitting tribute to a car that continues to captivate the automotive world, even 50 years after its introduction.
