Volvo Car South Africa has firmly positioned itself as the frontrunner in the local electric vehicle (EV) segment, boasting impressive sales figures that reflect both strong consumer demand and the brand’s commitment to an electrified future. With a combined total of 467 electric vehicles sold between January and September 2024, Volvo leads the premium electric segment, surpassing competitors despite offering a smaller range of models. This achievement not only highlights the growing popularity of EVs in South Africa but also underscores Volvo’s dominance in the luxury EV arena.
The Rise of the EX30: Volvo’s Best-Selling EV
Volvo’s breakthrough success is primarily driven by the EX30, which has become the best-selling premium EV in South Africa. With 348 units sold as of September, the EX30’s success has far outpaced its counterparts in the local market. The compact, tech-laden electric vehicle, priced from R791,900, offers exceptional value in the premium segment, combining advanced technology, sustainability, and performance in a stylish package. Its Twin Motor Performance version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in an impressive 3.6 seconds, making it one of the fastest and most exhilarating options in its class.
The EX30’s appeal goes beyond its performance. The car has garnered numerous accolades, most recently winning the prestigious New Energy Vehicle of the Year | Battery Electric Models at the 2024 naamsa Accelerator Awards. It is also a finalist for the 2025 Cars.co.za CarsAwards, further solidifying its status as a game-changer in the electric vehicle market.
Markus Cromwell, Commercial Director at Volvo Car South Africa, expressed his enthusiasm for the brand’s continued success, stating, “We have reached new sales heights in the first nine months of the year, driven by strong demand for the EX30. As we move closer to our goal of becoming an all-electric automaker – and prepare to introduce the exciting EX90 flagship locally – we anticipate our EV sales figures will set new records.”

The XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge: A Strong Contender
While the EX30 takes the lion’s share of sales, Volvo’s other electric models have also seen solid performance. The XC40 Recharge, the second-best-selling EV for Volvo in South Africa, delivered 96 units during the same period. Its success further emphasizes Volvo’s competitive edge, with XC40 Recharge sales surpassing two of its closest European rivals by an impressive 92% and 300%, respectively. The C40 Recharge, with 23 units sold, continues to cater to those seeking a coupe-style SUV, adding further depth to Volvo’s EV lineup.
Cromwell notes, “Our overall numbers reflect Volvo’s strong value proposition for our new and existing clientele. As we continue to make inroads into the South African EV market, we see significant potential for growth.” With the Volvo EX30 leading the charge, the brand is poised for even greater success as it expands its EV offerings.
Volvo’s Electrification Vision
As part of its overarching commitment to sustainability and electrification, Volvo has set ambitious goals to ensure a fully electric future. By 2030, the Swedish automaker aims for 90-100% of its global sales to consist of electrified vehicles, including both battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models. This strategy is in line with Volvo’s long-term vision of becoming an all-electric carmaker, a goal that will be advanced with the upcoming launch of the EX90, Volvo’s flagship electric SUV.
Moreover, Volvo’s dedication to offering a diverse range of electrified options means that South African customers can choose from a variety of powertrains, including battery-electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and mild hybrids (MHEVs). This flexibility ensures that Volvo’s customers have the freedom to select the vehicle that best suits their needs, whether they prioritize range, performance, or environmental sustainability.
Volvo Car South Africa’s remarkable performance in the EV market illustrates the growing acceptance of electric mobility in the country and underscores the Swedish automaker’s position as a leader in the premium electric vehicle segment. With the EX30 setting sales records and a commitment to expanding its electrified offerings, Volvo is set to continue driving the future of electric driving in South Africa. As the brand prepares to launch more exciting EVs, including the highly anticipated EX90, Volvo’s electrified vision is well on track to redefine the luxury automotive landscape.
