Volvo Cars has reached a historic milestone, producing the four millionth vehicle on its first-generation Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). Introduced in 2014 with the second-generation Volvo XC90, SPA has been the cornerstone of Volvo’s modern evolution, enabling the company to build diverse models, powertrains, and technologies on a shared architecture while significantly improving production efficiency.
The milestone vehicle, a Volvo XC90, recently rolled off the company’s production line in Sweden, marking a moment of pride for the brand and its global workforce.
“SPA spearheaded our company’s rebirth as a modern and premium brand,” says Michael Fleiss, chief strategy and product officer at Volvo Cars. “To this day, it remains the foundation for some of the most successful Volvo models in history and continues to reach new heights as we further improve on it.”
A Swedish-led Engineering Triumph
Proudly designed and developed in-house, SPA is the product of a Swedish-led R&D effort that has transformed Volvo’s production capabilities. Since its inception, SPA has underpinned six different models manufactured across three continents in four countries: Belgium, China, Sweden, and the United States. Its flexibility has allowed Volvo to adapt quickly to market demands and bring innovative solutions to customers worldwide.

Innovation in Safety and Design
SPA was not just a manufacturing breakthrough—it set new standards in safety and design. The platform introduced a range of world-first safety technologies that helped make the XC90 and subsequent models some of the safest vehicles on the road. Key innovations include the run-off road protection package, auto brake functionality at intersections, and an advanced safety cage enhanced with high-strength boron steel. These features continue to evolve, ensuring Volvo drivers benefit from cutting-edge safety for years to come.
The platform also enabled Volvo’s designers to push creative boundaries. Signature design elements such as the ‘Thor’s Hammer’ daytime running lights became a defining feature of the brand, while the introduction of the ‘Twin Engine’ powertrain—combining petrol and electric propulsion—laid the foundation for Volvo’s successful plug-in hybrid models.
Looking to the Future
Insights and lessons from the first-generation SPA are being carried forward into SPA2 and the upcoming SPA3 platforms, shaping the next generation of Volvo vehicles. Over-the-air software updates mean many SPA-based cars on the road today continue to receive enhancements, keeping them modern and up to date without additional cost to owners.
The platform continues to underpin Volvo’s best-selling models, including the XC60, S60, V60, S90, and XC90. Additional production of SPA-based models will soon commence at Volvo’s Charleston plant in the United States, further cementing the platform’s global significance.
As Volvo Cars celebrates the production of its four millionth SPA vehicle, it underscores the platform’s enduring legacy: a combination of innovation, safety, and design that continues to define the brand while driving the future of mobility.
