Volkswagen is redefining its vehicle naming strategy by transferring the names of its most iconic models into the all-electric ID. family. This move bridges the gap between traditional combustion-engine models and the brand’s growing portfolio of electric vehicles, providing customers with greater clarity and familiarity.
The first step in this transition will be the ID. Polo, set to debut in 2026. The production model evolves from the ID. 2all concept car, blending Volkswagen’s advanced electric technology with the trusted qualities of the Polo brand. Marking its 50th anniversary that year, the Polo name will live on as part of Volkswagen’s electric future.
Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen, emphasized the significance of this approach:
“Our model names are firmly anchored in people’s minds. They represent a strong brand identity, timeless design, and accessible technology. That’s why we’re carrying these names into the future. The ID. Polo is just the beginning.”
Building on this foundation, Volkswagen will continue transferring other well-known names into its electric lineup with each new model generation, while combustion-engine vehicles will retain their established names. This dual approach allows customers to navigate Volkswagen’s broad product range more easily.

The new naming strategy also extends to performance models. In 2026, the ID. Polo GTI will launch as the electric successor to the GTI legacy, derived from the ID. GTI Concept. According to Martin Sander, Volkswagen’s Board Member for Sales, Marketing, and Aftersales:
“A name like Polo has accompanied generations of drivers, shaping memories and milestones. By reviving these powerful names for our ID. models, we ensure electric mobility is not only innovative but also emotional, accessible, and personal.”
Both the ID. Polo and ID. Polo GTI will make their public debut at the IAA MOBILITY in Munich (8–14 September). Ahead of the event, Volkswagen will also unveil the ID. CROSS Concept, an electric compact SUV that will later enter production as the ID. Cross, positioned as the electric counterpart to the T-Cross.
With these additions, Volkswagen is entering a new era of affordable electric mobility. The upcoming models will combine advanced technology with customer-focused design improvements such as premium materials, intuitive controls, and a balance of digital and physical features.
Since the launch of the ID.3 in 2018, the ID. family has become Volkswagen’s dedicated all-electric range, with models spanning from the compact ID.3 to the flagship ID.7. The expansion with the ID. Polo and ID. Cross underscores Volkswagen’s commitment to making electric driving more attainable than ever.
