Round 3 of the 2026 motorsport season delivered another charged weekend for Toyota GAZOO Racing South Africa, with Zwartkops Raceway just outside Pretoria setting the stage for a fiercely competitive showdown across both the GR Cup and South African Touring Cars championships. Cool, cloud-laced skies on Friday gave way to crisp winter clarity on race day, creating near-perfect conditions for high-speed precision on one of Gauteng’s most technical circuits.
Across the paddock, Toyota GAZOO Racing South Africa once again asserted its presence at the sharp end of the field, with its SATC and GR Cup entries demonstrating both resilience and growing performance as the season reaches its midpoint.
In the South African Touring Cars category, the GR Corolla package continued its development arc with Michael van Rooyen and Jason Coetzee extracting competitive pace from a tightly matched field. Qualifying highlighted the progress, with Coetzee securing third on the grid and van Rooyen just behind in fourth after a session defined by razor-thin margins and the persistent challenge of straight-line speed deficits against key rivals.
Race 1 unfolded as a tactical and emotional high point. van Rooyen made an immediate impact, briefly taking the lead in the opening exchanges before settling into a sustained battle at the front, eventually bringing the car home in third after relentless pressure to the final corner. Coetzee remained firmly in contention throughout before a mid-race misfire disrupted his charge, yet still salvaged second place in a display of determination under mechanical strain.
Van Rooyen reflected on a weekend of measurable progress, noting that while top speed remained a limiting factor, the overall package had taken a meaningful step forward since previous rounds, particularly in race conditions where consistency mattered as much as outright pace.
Race 2 proved more challenging for the SATC duo. van Rooyen was forced to manage a suspected mechanical issue from the opening lap, wrestling a difficult car to a sixth-place finish, while Coetzee’s earlier momentum was also curtailed by technical gremlins that interrupted what had been a promising run.
In the GR Cup Media Challenge, Nabil Abdool of SuperSport continued an unbroken winning streak in the 2026 season, once again showcasing commanding pace in the Toyota GR Corolla DAT. Abdool secured pole position with a blistering 1:11.580 lap before converting it into two controlled victories, despite mounting pressure from rivals and a late safety car in Race 1 that compressed the field and sharpened the intensity to the finish.
Behind him, Craig Nicholson of News24 consistently applied pressure across both races, finishing second in class each time, while Yolanda “Girlie” Lukhele marked a standout debut with two podium finishes that immediately established her as a competitive presence in the GR Cup Hot Seat.
Midfield battles brought additional texture to the weekend, with drivers such as Justin Ford, Tayedza Mbiri and Kumbi Mtshakazi engaging in closely fought exchanges that reflected just how tightly matched the GR Cup field has become. The weekend was not without setbacks, however, as Naresh Maharaj’s early incident on Friday brought an abrupt end to his participation after damage to his car ruled him out of Saturday’s racing.
The GR Cup Dealer Challenge added another layer of intrigue as Paul de Vos of GR Driving Academy emerged as a new winner for the season. His performance combined composure and precision, securing pole position before converting it into two race wins and fastest laps in both encounters. Early pressure from Marius Claasen kept the opening race honest, while the rest of the field, including Werner Venter and Werner Horn, ensured that podium positions were heavily contested.
In the GR86 Development Academy, the duel between Kobus Reyneke and Connor Weston intensified further, producing one of the weekend’s most compelling narratives. Reyneke claimed Race 1 after securing pole, but Weston responded in Race 2 with a decisive overtake at Turn 4 before controlling the race from the front. A puncture for Reyneke shifted the balance of the weekend, while Kian Fussell maintained consistency with double podium finishes and Emma Dowling remained firmly embedded in the leading group throughout.
As the 2026 season approaches its midpoint, momentum continues to build across all categories for Toyota GAZOO Racing South Africa. The next chapter awaits at Aldo Scribante Raceway near Gqeberha, where both the GR Cup and SATC fields will once again be tested by a circuit known for its technical demands and unforgiving rhythm.
