SVI Engineering has unveiled what it describes as its most luxurious creation yet, a discreetly armoured Mercedes-Benz Sprinter that combines comprehensive ballistic protection with the comfort and exclusivity of a private lounge. Revealed at Securex South Africa 2026 in Johannesburg, the vehicle represents a new approach to VIP transport, blending security, luxury and practicality in a single package.
The project is based on the long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz 517 CDI Sprinter, a platform chosen for its generous dimensions and versatility. After stripping the interior, SVI's engineering team developed a bespoke B6 armouring package designed to provide protection against assault rifles, including the AK47, R1 and R5.
The armouring solution incorporates custom-fabricated steel plates, lightweight composite materials and ballistic glass manufactured to original equipment specifications. The result is a discreet protection package that maintains the vehicle's premium appearance while delivering one of the highest levels of civilian ballistic protection available.
According to SVI Business Development Director Nicol Louw, the objective was to create a secure transport solution that offers an experience comparable to a private jet.
"Our goal with this project was to create a first-class experience akin to that of a private jet for the road. From the moment the doors close, the outside world ceases to exist. The lucky passengers are wrapped in an environment of absolute opulence, all while enjoying the peace of mind that comes with SVI-engineered armour," said Louw.
A dedicated bulkhead separates the front cabin from the rear passenger compartment. The front section is intended for a close protection officer driver and an additional member of the security team, ensuring privacy and separation between passengers and support personnel.
The Sprinter's substantial 4,325 mm wheelbase and overall length of 6,967 mm provide an unusually spacious foundation for the rear passenger area. This generous interior volume has allowed SVI to create a truly bespoke environment tailored to the needs of high-profile clients.
The rear compartment has been designed as a private lounge, featuring two premium seats equipped with reclining and massage functions. Clients can customise the interior according to their preferences, selecting finishes such as luxury carpeting or premium wooden flooring.
The demonstration vehicle displayed at Securex South Africa includes a 55-inch television screen that can be raised or lowered on demand, complemented by a high-end audio system. The entertainment and comfort features are intended to provide a first-class travel experience regardless of journey length.
Further enhancing the luxury offering are twin refrigerators, a dedicated kitchen area and an enclosed restroom complete with toilet facilities. These features transform the Sprinter into a self-contained executive transport solution capable of supporting extended travel without compromising passenger comfort.
Passenger comfort is further supported by a standalone air-conditioning system that exclusively services the rear lounge area. Extensive soundproofing measures have also been incorporated to maximise privacy and reduce external noise intrusion, creating a calm and refined environment.
To ensure the driving experience matches the premium nature of the cabin, SVI has implemented bespoke suspension tuning aimed at delivering a smoother and more comfortable ride quality.
Externally, the vehicle maintains a subtle and sophisticated appearance. Finished in black and fitted with an upgraded grille and front bumper, the Sprinter avoids drawing unnecessary attention while still projecting a premium presence.
Power comes from Mercedes-Benz's proven 2.0-litre four-cylinder OM654 turbodiesel engine, which produces 125 kW and 400 Nm. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual transmission or a nine-speed automatic gearbox, with power delivered to the rear wheels.
While pricing remains available only on application, SVI indicates that the vehicle occupies a unique position in the market, costing more than a Mercedes-Benz G-Class but significantly less than a private jet.
Louw believes the project establishes a new benchmark for secure luxury transportation.
"By combining our proven armouring expertise with a bespoke, high-end interior configuration, we believe we have set a new benchmark for secure, discreet VIP transport. Ultimately, this vehicle proves that you do not have to sacrifice first-class comfort and space for the highest level of ballistic protection available to civilians. Quite simply, there's nothing else like it on the market," he said.
Founded in 2004, SVI has established itself as one of Africa's leading armoured vehicle manufacturers, serving private, corporate, security, mining and government clients. The company holds Level 2 B-BBEE certification and maintains an ISO 9001:2015-certified quality management system, reinforcing its reputation as a specialist in secure mobility solutions.
