As the 2025 Simola Hillclimb roars to life in Knysna, Suzuki Auto South Africa has officially declared its trio of race entries ready for action. Following a smooth round of scrutineering, all three vehicles – each in showroom condition – passed pre-race inspections with ease. The Japanese automaker’s no-fuss approach is once again making a strong statement: you don’t need hypercars or heavy modification to make a mark on the hill.
“Modified and special vehicles typically require significantly more checks,” said Suzuki Race Team Manager, Chelsy Pinto. “Our cars are unchanged from those that you would encounter on showroom floors across the country, and as such they required little more than a cursory inspection.”
The 1.9km Simola Hill, with its demanding sequence of nine tight corners, is not traditionally a playground for standard production cars. Yet, Suzuki’s decision to once again field showroom-spec contenders in the 2–4 May event is a bold celebration of everyday performance, driver engagement, and the joy of motoring.

The Jimny: A Cult Icon Takes on the Hill
Perhaps the most unconventional of Suzuki’s entries is a 3-door Jimny, driven by motoring journalist and AutoTrader’s Sean Nurse. Entered in the B9 class, the compact off-roader will face a field dominated by far larger and more powerful SUVs – a mismatch that Nurse relishes.
“I think it’s going to provide a little bit of entertainment for the crowds,” said Nurse. “It’s something entirely different from what you normally see at the hill. A break from all the supercars and crazy things. It’s a bit of a personal challenge to drive something like this at Simola – a little bit crazy, but yeah, I’m looking forward to it.”
With its unmistakable boxy shape, short wheelbase, and high centre of gravity, the Jimny is far from a typical hillclimb racer – but that’s exactly what makes it such a compelling crowd-pleaser.
The Swift Sport: Punching Above Its Weight
Piloted by Wiele2Wiele’s Jeanette Kok-Kritzinger, the turbocharged 3rd generation Swift Sport enters the fray in Class A1. With 103kW and 230Nm on tap from its 1.4-litre BoosterJet engine, this featherweight contender is no stranger to Simola – and has proven itself a surprisingly quick package in previous years.
“You have all these cars with big horsepower and then you have a little Swift,” said Kok-Kritzinger. “But that is exactly the point – you don’t need all the horsepower or all the money in the world to have fun. We are ‘team fun’ – and this yellow Swift Sport pays homage to Suzuki’s World Rally and Junior World Rally Championship roots. It’s not just yellow because someone liked the colour. It’s yellow because of the racing history.”
The Swift Sport’s mix of turbocharged punch, agile handling, and undeniable charm make it a fan favourite and a genuine performer – even against significantly more powerful competition.
The Swift GLX: The Everyday Hero
TV presenter and performance coach Ernest Page will be behind the wheel of the most humble of the trio: a 4th generation Suzuki Swift GLX. With just 60kW and 112Nm from its 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine, this car is a familiar sight on South African roads – and that’s precisely the point.
“I’m looking at the event from a fun perspective, to prove that you can have fun on a racetrack in any car,” said Page. “The Suzuki Swift is so popular in South Africa, and I think that’s what makes this so relatable. Whether you’re a competitor or a spectator, you can’t miss Simola.”
Riding on Suzuki’s lightweight HEARTECT platform, the new Swift GLX may not light up the timing sheets, but it embodies the spirit of accessible performance and real-world relevance – values that continue to resonate with South African drivers.
Two Wheels Meet the Hill: GSX-8R Demo Runs
Suzuki’s presence at Simola extends beyond the start line. Two of the brand’s striking new GSX-8R sportbikes will be showcased during the weekend, with Nicole Purificati and Tristin Pienaar performing high-speed demo runs up the hill. Sleek, agile, and seriously quick, these machines offer a thrilling taste of Suzuki’s two-wheeled engineering prowess.
A Growing Legacy at Simola
Suzuki first became involved in Simola Hillclimb as a full participant in 2022, though Suzuki-powered vehicles first took to the hill in 2021. Since then, the brand has solidified its role as a Tier One OEM sponsor – not only through its active participation but also by championing a message of inclusive, affordable performance.
With its 2025 line-up combining stock simplicity, proven agility, and a healthy dose of fun, Suzuki once again reminds us that passion – not power – is the ultimate driving force at Simola.
