Milton Keynes/Bilbao, June 30, 2025 — In the heart of Spain’s Rioja region, Audi has brought together a remarkable fleet of milestone models to mark a major moment in the brand’s history: the 60th anniversary of its return to the global automotive stage at the 1965 Frankfurt Motor Show. What began as the unveiling of a modest saloon simply named “The Audi” has since blossomed into one of the most recognisable and respected automotive brands in the world — a journey fuelled by daring design, engineering excellence and a relentless forward vision.
This commemorative event in Rioja, set against the avant-garde backdrop of landmarks such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and the iconic Hotel Marqués de Riscal, offers an immersive retrospective of Audi’s design evolution — from its rebirth in the 1960s to its electric future.
Rewriting the Rules Since 1965
The 1965 Frankfurt Motor Show marked more than just a new model reveal — it signalled a revival. After decades of dormancy following the end of Audi 920 production in 1940, the Audi name returned atop a technically advanced update of the DKW F102. Known simply as “The Audi,” the car featured subtle styling tweaks but showcased major engineering progress, including the use of a four-stroke engine instead of a two-stroke.
This was the moment the Audi name — inspired by the Latin translation of company founder August Horch’s surname — was reborn. “Horch” means “listen” in German, and “Audi” in Latin, a fitting metaphor for a brand that has always been attuned to the future.
The model’s success gave rise to a new range — including the Audi 60, 75, 80 and Super 90 — which laid the foundations of a family lineage that continues to evolve. Yet, this rebirth was not guaranteed. Under the ownership of Volkswagen AG, there were initially no plans to continue the Audi name, with intentions to use Auto Union GmbH solely for Volkswagen development. Thankfully, Technical Director Ludwig Kraus had other ideas. He secretly developed what would become the seminal 1968 Audi 100 — a model that would not only secure Audi’s place in the Volkswagen Group portfolio but push the brand firmly into premium territory.
Design That Defines Decades
“Audi’s hallmark design cues and attention to detail are visible throughout every era,” says Audi exterior designer Gary Telaak. “Design has always been a fundamental pillar of the Audi brand and core to our Vorsprung durch Technik ethos. The next chapter in Audi design will remain faithful to the past.”
Audi’s unwavering commitment to clean lines, functional elegance and innovation is embodied in the collection of milestone models showcased at the Rioja event — many of them part of the Audi UK heritage fleet.
Among the highlights:
- The Ur-quattro (1981): A rally legend and road car pioneer, this muscular icon introduced quattro all-wheel drive to the world, pairing it with a charismatic 2.1-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine. Today, its DNA lives on in the potent RS 3.
- The TT Coupé (1999): A geometric masterpiece whose design closely mirrors the original 1995 concept. The TT’s bold form and meticulously detailed interior, including machined aluminium accents, redefined sports car styling.
- The R8 (2007 V8 and 2018 V10 RWS): Drawing from the 2003 Le Mans quattro concept, the R8 brought supercar performance into the Audi stable. The limited-edition RWS version, Audi’s first rear-wheel-drive R8, epitomised purity of performance and was hailed by enthusiasts as a true driver’s car.

A Future Rooted in Progress
While the celebration honours the past, Audi is also looking forward. Its rapidly growing all-electric portfolio is the clearest expression yet of the brand’s design and technological ambition.
At the Rioja gathering, attendees had the chance to experience the RS e-tron GT, an electric gran turismo that blends breathtaking design with high-performance sustainability, and the A6 Sportback e-tron, which with a drag coefficient of just 0.21 is Audi’s most aerodynamic production model to date.
José Miguel Aparicio, Director of Audi UK, perfectly encapsulates the moment:
“Since its re-emergence in the Sixties, Audi has firmly established a reputation for design that imaginatively looks to the future but always stands the test of time. The Rioja region — home to some of the world’s most innovative architecture — is a fitting setting to reflect on 60 years of progressive thinking, bold aesthetics and technical brilliance.”
A Legacy in Motion
As Audi marks six decades since its pivotal moment at Frankfurt in 1965, its trajectory remains unwavering. From resurrecting a name with deep historic resonance to shaping the face of premium mobility through landmark innovations, Audi’s past is rich — but its future is even more compelling.
