In the world of historic motorsport, few vehicles evoke as much nostalgia and excitement as the Ford Sierra RS500. Now, thanks to CNC Motorsport and their collaboration with four-time saloon and touring car champion Andy Rouse, the iconic Group A racer is making a triumphant return. The first of three period-correct RS500s has been delivered to its new owner, marking a significant milestone in the revival of these legendary machines.
A Tribute to History
The project began with a vision: to create faithful continuations of the RS500, allowing enthusiasts to experience the thrill of racing in a vehicle that stays true to its roots. The first car was meticulously assembled over a two-year period by Alan Strachan, a former employee of Andy Rouse Engineering, and his son Andrew. Their dedication to authenticity ensured that every detail aligned with the specifications of the original cars raced during the 1980s and ’90s.
The ongoing construction of the second RS500 is already underway, with a brand-new Motorsport specification bodyshell secured at the project’s inception. A third donor shell has also been sourced, ensuring that this ambitious undertaking remains on track.
Precision Engineering
CNC Motorsport undertook the crucial task of fabricating the bodyshell and all essential machined components, including uprights, rear arms, hubs, brake calipers, and wheel centres. Each part has been crafted in-house to the exacting standards of the period Andy Rouse Engineering cars. Drawing on Andy Rouse’s extensive experience and insights, the team meticulously replicated key features from the original vehicles, such as the Getrag five-speed gearbox and period-style gauges.
Safety and authenticity remain paramount, with the roll cage being a highlight of the build. CNC Motorsport is the only certified producer of period-correct Andy Rouse Engineering cages recognized by Motorsport UK, ensuring that every vehicle adheres to the highest safety standards while maintaining historical accuracy.

Performance Meets Enjoyment
At the heart of the first completed RS500 lies a formidable 575bhp Cosworth YB engine, expertly built by Harvey Gibbs. This power unit, paired with a 10” viscous differential, promises not only blistering performance but also reliability—a critical factor for any motorsport endeavor.
Alan Strachan aptly describes the project: “This initiative allows us to construct a reliable, period-correct car that can compete in historic motorsport at a fraction of the cost of an original. These vehicles are designed to be enjoyed, raced hard and fair, without the anxiety of damaging a valuable piece of history.”
The allure of the RS500 extends beyond its mechanical prowess; it serves as a beacon for motorsport enthusiasts eager to witness the spectacle of these flame-spitting machines in action. With the ability to participate in a variety of events across Europe, these cars provide a unique opportunity for drivers to engage with the rich legacy of Group A racing.
The Road Ahead
As CNC Motorsport prepares for the completion of the second and third RS500s, the excitement within the historic motorsport community continues to grow. With full HTP papers, these vehicles will be eligible for a wide array of historic racing events, further solidifying their place in the pantheon of racing legends.
The resurgence of the Ford Sierra RS500 stands as a testament to the enduring passion for motorsport and the lengths to which enthusiasts will go to preserve the past while paving the way for future generations. As these cars take to the track once more, they not only honor their storied heritage but also ignite a renewed interest in the thrilling world of historic racing.
