The plug-in hybrid battlefield is crowded, competitive, and increasingly electrified, but the MG HS PHEV has just carved its name into the very top of the leaderboard with the kind of confidence that makes rivals quietly check their tyre pressures twice.
In a landmark megatest conducted by Auto Express, spanning 59 plug-in hybrid cars across the UK market, the MG HS PHEV surged into first place. After three days of real-world testing across electric range, fuel efficiency, refinement, dynamics and usability, the verdict landed with striking clarity: “The best plug-in hybrid you can buy right now.”
That result does not arrive in isolation. The HS PHEV is already on a streak of acclaim, having secured What Car? Plug-in Hybrid of the Year awards for both 2025 and 2026, making it one of the most consistently recognised electrified models in Britain’s current automotive landscape.
For MG Motor UK, the recognition reinforces a strategy built around accessible electrification without sacrificing everyday practicality. Guy Pigounakis, Commercial Director at MG Motor UK, described the dual endorsement from leading UK publications as powerful validation, noting that topping a field of 59 rivals while retaining back-to-back awards reflects both technological progress and a commitment to value-driven engineering.
At the heart of the MG HS PHEV’s success is its hybrid+ system, pairing a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 24.7kWh battery. The combination delivers a claimed electric-only range of up to 75 miles, a figure that places it firmly among the most capable plug-in hybrids in its class for daily zero-emission driving. In testing, Auto Express recorded a standout real-world electric range of 68 miles, the longest of any vehicle in the megatest, even outperforming rivals equipped with larger battery packs.
Performance is equally uncharacteristic of what its pricing might suggest. With a combined output of 295bhp, the HS PHEV delivers strong, composed acceleration while maintaining a relaxed and predictable driving character. The magazine highlighted the system’s balance between electric smoothness and hybrid flexibility, alongside a user-friendly digital interface that avoids unnecessary complexity.
Inside, the cabin continues the theme of thoughtful restraint blended with modern tech. Dual 12.3-inch displays anchor the dashboard, offering clear, responsive interaction for infotainment and driver information. Heated front seats come as standard, while higher trims introduce more premium finishes, including optional tan leather-style upholstery that adds warmth to the minimalist layout. The result is an interior designed for daily usability rather than visual theatrics, yet still comfortably aligned with modern expectations.
Perhaps the most disruptive element of the MG HS PHEV’s performance is not just its capability, but its pricing. At £32,495 for SE trim and £34,995 for Trophy, it undercuts every other vehicle in the top five of the megatest, in some cases by a significant margin. Auto Express also noted that leasing costs can be up to £200 per month lower than its closest competitor in the rankings, reinforcing its position as a budget-conscious yet highly competitive option.
For company car drivers, the appeal is further amplified by its 7% Benefit-in-Kind tax band positioning, placing it among a select group of low-tax plug-in hybrids in the test. This combination of electric range, performance and fiscal efficiency makes it particularly attractive in fleet environments where total cost of ownership is critical.
Auto Express summarised the MG HS as “a decent car, at a terrific price,” a line that captures its broader appeal. It is not simply a value proposition, but a fully rounded plug-in hybrid that challenges assumptions about where affordability ends and capability begins.
In a market where electrification is often framed as premium territory, the MG HS PHEV is reshaping expectations with quiet authority. It does not rely on extravagance or complexity to make its case. Instead, it leans on measurable efficiency, genuine everyday usability and a price point that feels almost deliberately disruptive.
With consecutive What Car? titles and a dominant Auto Express megatest win now behind it, the MG HS PHEV stands not just as a strong contender in the plug-in hybrid space, but as one of its defining benchmarks.
