Johannesburg, South Africa – For more than a century, MG has defined what it means to blend sport, style and accessibility. From its birth in Oxford in 1924 under the vision of Cecil Kimber to its record-breaking motorsport successes, MG has long been synonymous with driving enjoyment and unmistakable British character. Today, that heritage finds its most electrifying expression yet in the all-electric MG Cyberster.
Unveiled to global acclaim at Auto Shanghai in 2023, the Cyberster signals a bold return to MG’s roadster DNA. It is the world’s first and only open-top, two-seat electric roadster in production, marrying the brand’s classic proportions—a long bonnet, low nose, flowing surfaces—with contemporary flourishes like dramatic scissor doors and a distinctive Kammback rear. Carl Gotham, Advanced Design Director at MG’s London studio, says, “Our intention was to create a completely new roadster ready for a new generation of sports car drivers – one that respects MG’s illustrious past while being absolutely modern and forward-facing.”
Performance is where the Cyberster truly redefines MG. Available in dual-motor configurations in South Africa, it produces 375kW and 725Nm of torque, rocketing from 0-100km/h in just 3.2 seconds, making it the fastest production MG ever. A 77kWh battery offers up to 443km of range (WLTP), while 150kW DC rapid charging enables 10-80% charge in just 38 minutes. Multiple drive modes—from Comfort to Sport and Track—give drivers precise control, whether navigating city streets or pushing boundaries on a winding road.
Inside, the Cyberster fuses classic roadster intimacy with modern luxury. A wraparound three-screen cockpit, premium materials, MG Pilot advanced driver assistance, and features usually reserved for high-end grand tourers ensure the car feels as sophisticated as it drives.
The Cyberster has already earned global recognition, winning ‘Best Sports Car’ at The British Motor Show, ‘Best EV Roadster’ at the Top Gear Electric Awards, and ‘Most Anticipated New Car’ at the Carwow Car of the Year Awards, all in 2024. Locally, it was nominated as a semi-finalist in the 2026 Old Mutual Car of the Year Competition. Judges have praised its performance, design, sustainability, and premium value—qualities that have defined MG for generations.
MG’s centenary celebrations at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed highlighted the brand’s enduring legacy. Historic roadsters, record-breaking cars, and the Cyberster shared the stage, underscoring MG’s unique ability to honor its past while embracing the future. Alongside the Cyberster, concepts such as the Cyber GTS and the EXE181—a modern electric reinterpretation of Stirling Moss’s EX181 ‘Roaring Raindrop’—demonstrated MG’s commitment to innovation and electrification.
For South African drivers, the MG Cyberster is more than a car—it is a statement. With 49 dealerships nationwide and plans for further expansion in 2026, MG Motor South Africa is bringing this century-old British marque closer to local roads than ever before. From Oxford in 1924 to the electric roadster of today, MG remains true to its founding promise: to build cars that are innovative, engaging, and, above all, exhilarating to drive.
The Cyberster is not just MG’s fastest and most sophisticated car—it is the bridge connecting the brand’s storied past with a thrilling, electrified future.
