Mazda’s acclaimed mid-size SUV, the CX-5, has reached a landmark sales milestone in the UK, with over 100,000 units sold since its debut in 2012. The achievement underlines the enduring appeal of a model that not only helped redefine Mazda’s identity but continues to lead its sales in the British market.
Now in its second generation and available in a 15-model line-up, the CX-5 remains Mazda’s best-selling vehicle in the UK, a testament to its balance of style, performance and quality that has consistently resonated with British SUV buyers.
A Defining Chapter in Mazda’s History
The first-generation Mazda CX-5 was launched in 2012 as a bold new step for the brand. It was the first production model to showcase Mazda’s now-iconic Kodo – Soul of Motion design language, paired with the pioneering Skyactiv technology platform, delivering both dynamic efficiency and engaging driving characteristics. Based on the 2011 Minagi concept and revealed in full production guise at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, the CX-5 instantly won praise from press and public alike.
It quickly established itself as a sales success and carved a path for the evolution of Mazda’s SUV offering, setting a benchmark for driver-focused crossovers in a segment often defined by compromise. A substantial update in 2015 paved the way for the second-generation CX-5, which arrived in 2017 with enhanced refinement, advanced technology, and even more expressive design.

Innovation Through Evolution
Over the years, Mazda has demonstrated a commitment to keeping the CX-5 relevant in a fast-moving market. The 2022 update brought a host of improvements across design, interior refinement and technology. Today, the CX-5 features Mazda’s 24v mild-hybrid system across all petrol variants, with cylinder deactivation included on the 165ps petrol automatic models. Diesel buyers are still catered to with the 184ps Skyactiv-D engine.
Mazda’s careful evolution of the CX-5 has allowed the SUV to stay fresh, while retaining the core appeal that made it a success in the first place: premium feel, driver engagement, practicality, and standout design.
A Global and Local Success
Globally, the CX-5 has been a phenomenon, with over 4.5 million units produced since launch, making it one of Mazda’s most successful models of all time. In the UK, that global success is mirrored in local enthusiasm — a reflection not only of the CX-5’s strong product credentials but also of the brand’s growing reputation in the SUV space.
Speaking on the significance of the milestone, Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director of Mazda Motors UK, commented:
“The Mazda CX-5 is an incredibly important car in Mazda’s history. From the launch of the original first-generation car in 2012, it has been a hugely popular choice for UK SUV buyers, who have loved its style, quality and driver engagement.”
“It’s a car that has seen amazing customer loyalty and satisfaction, so it’s great that sales have passed 100,000 in the UK. It’s incredible to look back and consider just how much the UK market has changed since the CX-5’s launch in 2012.”
Laying the Foundation for Mazda’s SUV Range
Today, the CX-5 is an integral part of a comprehensive SUV portfolio that includes the smaller CX-30, the plug-in hybrid CX-60, and the forthcoming three-row CX-80. Yet it was the CX-5 that laid the groundwork, establishing Mazda as a serious contender in the SUV space and proving that a practical crossover can still offer driving pleasure and distinctive design.
Thomson concluded:
“The current Mazda CX-5 is an example of how Mazda’s successive updates and refinements to every aspect of this ever-popular SUV have kept it competitive, and I look forward to what the future holds for this fantastic SUV.”
As the market continues to evolve and customer expectations rise, the CX-5 stands as a shining example of how thoughtful engineering and bold design can keep a model relevant, competitive and loved — even after more than a decade on the road. With this latest milestone, the Mazda CX-5’s legacy in the UK is not only assured, but still very much in motion.
