As the autumn months approach, Kumho Tyre UK is stepping up its commitment to road safety by partnering with Tyre Safe for the Tyre Safety Month 2024 campaign. This year’s initiative, aptly named ‘Caught in the ACT’, seeks to ignite a vital behavioural transformation among drivers by underscoring the significance of regular tyre maintenance. With the aim of fostering a proactive approach to tyre safety, Kumho encourages motorists to incorporate essential checks into their routines, ultimately enhancing road safety for all.
The Imperative of Tyre Maintenance
At the heart of this campaign are the fundamental aspects of tyre care: Air Pressure, Condition, and Tread. TyreSafe’s strategy is to instill a habit of monthly inspections among drivers, empowering them to take ownership of their vehicle’s safety. This call to action is especially timely, coinciding with one of the busiest periods in the UK’s MOT calendar. An estimated 3.4 million MOT tests were anticipated in September alone, with similar figures expected for October and November. This surge in vehicle inspections presents an opportune moment to spotlight the pivotal role that tyres play in overall vehicle safety.
Government statistics reveal a troubling trend: tyres are among the leading causes of failure during MOT tests, particularly for first-time tests at the three-year mark. According to the DVSA, over two million MOT failures each year are attributed to tyre defects, with approximately one million classified as dangerous. Alarmingly, tyres have been identified as the primary reason for failures in the initial seven years of a vehicle’s life. In light of this data, Kumho Tyre UK recognizes the critical need to inform and educate drivers about the significance of regular tyre maintenance and timely replacement.
Richard Lyons, Managing Director of Kumho Tyre UK, remarked, “Tyres consistently appear on MOT advisory notices, yet they are often overlooked by drivers. We aim to play an active role in ensuring UK motorists’ mobility and safety by helping to raise awareness of tyres as safety-critical components.”

Legal Requirements and Safety Risks
To maintain legal compliance, tyres must meet a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread area. Failure to meet this requirement can lead to MOT failures, as well as fines of up to £2,500 per tyre and points on a driver’s licence. Given that tyres are the only contact point between a vehicle and the road, their condition is paramount. Kumho is advocating for drivers to prioritize regular checks and maintenance to ensure that their tyres are in optimal condition.
Worn, under-inflated, or damaged tyres can severely compromise a vehicle’s handling, braking, and overall safety, particularly in adverse weather conditions. With the cold and wet conditions of a British winter approaching, ensuring peak tyre performance is essential. Kumho’s product line is designed to deliver outstanding handling and braking performance on both wet and dry roads, with the Ecsta HS52 gaining high marks in independent tests conducted in 2024.
A Comprehensive Approach to Tyre Safety
Kumho also offers the Solus HA32, an all-season tyre engineered for year-round performance. This versatile option provides reliable traction across dry, wet, and light snow conditions. Its directional tread pattern enhances water drainage to mitigate hydroplaning, while high-density sipes improve grip on slippery surfaces. Designed with comfort and quietness in mind, the HA32 promises a smooth ride and durability. Notably, it carries the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) certification, affirming its capability in severe snow, making it an excellent choice for varied climates.
For those bracing for more severe winter conditions, the WinterCraft WP52 and WP72 patterns offer enhanced traction on icy and snowy roads, ensuring optimal safety during the colder months.
Reflecting on the impact of the pandemic on vehicle maintenance, Richard Lyons emphasized, “The MOT extension granted during the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the disconnection between MOT testing and regular servicing. We urge the industry to seize this busy period as an opportunity to remind drivers of the importance of coupling MOTs with comprehensive vehicle servicing, especially tyre checks.”
Kumho Tyre UK’s support of Tyre Safety Month 2024 is not just a campaign; it’s a clarion call for all road users to take tyre safety seriously. By adopting regular tyre maintenance practices and understanding the essential role tyres play in vehicle safety, drivers can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and ensure a safer driving experience. As we head into a busy MOT season, let’s remember that a commitment to tyre safety is a commitment to our own safety and the safety of others on the road.
