Pretoria, South Africa, 30 October 2024 – JLR is riding a wave of demand for its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models, as more consumers make the shift towards electrification. Global retail sales of JLR’s PHEV models increased by 29% in the first half of this financial year, a testament to the company’s positioning of plug-in hybrids as an accessible bridge to fully electric vehicles (BEVs).
At the forefront of this growth is the Range Rover brand, which saw a remarkable 47% rise in global PHEV sales during this period. The Range Rover Defender also contributed to the uptick with a 23% increase in global PHEV sales, underscoring the demand for electrified options across JLR’s most iconic models. Building upon last year’s figures, the momentum is undeniable: JLR’s global PHEV sales surged 59% year-on-year in FY24, with new Range Rover PHEV sales nearly doubling in that same period.
Mark Camilleri, JLR’s Director of Electrification Services, attributes this growth to the increasing appeal of PHEVs as customers become more comfortable with electrification: “Demand is growing for our plug-in electric hybrid models as clients become more accustomed to electrification. PHEVs offer performance, fuel economy, and low emissions, with zero emissions while driving in pure electric mode.” He emphasizes that JLR’s PHEVs also allow consumers to adjust to the charging infrastructure and maintenance of electrified vehicles, preparing them for the impending launch of JLR’s next-generation, fully electric models.

Central to JLR’s commitment to electrification is its Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA), underpinning the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, which offers flexibility with internal combustion engine (ICE), PHEV, and soon BEV options. The PHEV versions of these models offer up to 113 kilometers of pure electric range—a distance more than three times the daily average of 32 kilometers covered by UK drivers, highlighting the practical usability of these vehicles for typical daily commutes.
With a reported 48,000 clients on the waiting list for the Range Rover Electric, it is clear that JLR’s luxury electric offerings are anticipated with enthusiasm. The Range Rover Electric represents the beginning of a comprehensive zero-emission lineup that JLR plans to introduce across its brands, further aligning with the company’s commitment to have a pure electric variant of each nameplate by 2030 and to reach carbon net zero by 2039.
In an evolving automotive landscape, JLR’s PHEV models deliver a balanced solution—offering immediate reductions in emissions and fueling costs while maintaining the familiar driving experience of ICE vehicles. With these options, JLR meets consumers where they are today, fostering a smooth transition to a fully electrified future.
