For a quarter of a century, Defender and the Kingsley Holgate Foundation have shared more than routes across maps. They have shared a belief that adventure, when guided by purpose, can become a powerful force for humanitarian change.
This year marks 25 years of continuous partnership between the iconic adventure brand and one of Africa’s most respected humanitarian and conservation organisations. Since the partnership began in 2000, Defender vehicles have powered more than 40 Kingsley Holgate Foundation expeditions across Africa and beyond, enabling the team to reach some of the world’s most remote and vulnerable communities.
From the arid deserts of the north to the flood-swollen equatorial rainforests of Central Africa, and down to the southern tip where two oceans converge, Defender has been a constant presence. In environments where infrastructure disappears and conventional aid delivery becomes impossible, the vehicle’s durability and capability have made it possible for life-saving support to travel far beyond the last tarred road.
Over the past 25 years, this shared journey has translated into tangible, life-altering impact. The Kingsley Holgate Foundation has distributed more than 473 300 long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets, helping to protect over 1,4 million mothers and children against malaria. Alongside this, the Foundation’s Rite to Sight campaign has restored clear vision to thousands of elderly, poor-sighted men and women, while its Wildlife Art and youth-focused conservation programmes have inspired a new generation of environmental custodians across the continent.
A new expedition to honour a legendary journey
To commemorate this milestone partnership, the Kingsley Holgate Foundation is embarking on its 43rd expedition, a three-month journey beginning in January 2026 and aptly named the Defender Africa Traverse.
The expedition pays homage to the Foundation’s world-renowned Capricorn Expedition, a landmark journey that was chronicled in a book and a seven-part National Geographic television series. That original expedition followed the latitude of the Tropic of Capricorn, charting a path of discovery, conservation and humanitarian outreach. The Defender Africa Traverse reimagines this legacy for a new era.
Travelling west to east across Southern Africa, the team will journey from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean using two expedition-equipped Defender 130 Outbounds. The route begins on Namibia’s haunting Skeleton Coast, where the desert meets the sea, before pushing east into Botswana and across the vast Makgadikgadi Pans, the largest salt pans on Earth. From there, the expedition continues through the Kalahari, the world’s greatest mantle of rolling, vegetated sand.
In South Africa, the Defenders will follow the legendary Ivory Trail, weaving through some of the country’s most iconic wildlife regions along the 23°27′ latitude line. Each kilometre echoes the spirit of exploration that has defined the Foundation’s work for decades, while reinforcing the enduring role of Defender as a vehicle engineered for extraordinary journeys.
Humanitarian impact at the heart of the journey
True to the Foundation’s mission, the Defender Africa Traverse is not simply about distance or destination. It remains firmly anchored in humanitarian action.
A major focus of the expedition will once again be malaria prevention in high-risk regions along the Limpopo River, including the Gaza and Inhambane provinces of Mozambique. Here, pregnant mothers and young children will receive high-quality, long-lasting mosquito nets, along with vital education on malaria prevention. This initiative builds on a life-saving programme that has already reached nearly one and a half million people across Africa.
The Rite to Sight campaign will continue along the expedition route, restoring vision to elderly community members whose quality of life has been diminished by untreated poor eyesight. In parallel, the Foundation’s youth-focused conservation education programme will aim to ignite curiosity and responsibility among young people living close to Africa’s most precious natural ecosystems.
Reflecting on the human impact of these expeditions, Ross Holgate, Expedition Leader at the Kingsley Holgate Foundation, spoke to the profound moments that define the work.
“There is a magic moment when you give someone back their gift of sight,” he said. “Watching their world literally come back into focus, seeing their face light up as they see clearly for the first time in years, you immediately know that a life has been changed. On the other hand, knowing that every single minute of every day somewhere in Africa a child dies from malaria, the need to intensify the distribution of life-saving mosquito nets is magnified. That’s why we are grateful to Defender for enabling us to continue to do the work that we do.”
A partnership built on shared values
For Defender, the 25-year milestone reflects a partnership rooted in shared values rather than sponsorship alone. It is a collaboration where vehicle capability and brand purpose intersect in meaningful ways.
Janico Dannhauser, Defender Brand Manager at JLR South Africa, described the anniversary as a testament to that alignment.
“The 25-year milestone is a testament to the shared values of adventure and humanitarian service that define the Defender brand and the Kingsley Holgate Foundation,” she said. “Defender is engineered for extraordinary journeys, and there is no better proof of its capability than enabling the Foundation to reach remote communities and deliver life-changing aid. We are proud to once again power the Africa Traverse, a fitting celebration of this enduring and vital partnership.”
For Kingsley Holgate himself, the journey has always been about more than exploration. It has been about using adventure as a bridge between worlds.
“The partnership with Defender has been more than just a journey across Africa,” he concluded. “It’s been a journey of purpose. For 25 years, these vehicles have been our trusted companions as we’ve crossed every country on the continent, reaching communities in some of the most inaccessible places imaginable. Together with the brand, we’ve proven that adventure can truly change lives.”
As the Defender Africa Traverse prepares to set off, it does so as a redesigned echo of the original Capricorn journey. More than a celebration of distance covered or obstacles conquered, it stands as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when exploration, engineering and empathy move forward together.
