Pretoria, South Africa – 25 November 2025 – Defender Rally has lifted the veil on its latest competitive machine: the Defender Dakar D7X-R. Set to make its world debut at the 2026 Dakar Rally, the D7X-R marks Defender’s full-throttle entry into the newly launched Stock category of the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC), a platform designed to showcase production-based vehicles in their purest, most capable form.
With three crews – Dakar legend Stéphane Peterhansel and co-driver Mika Metge, Rokas Baciuška with Oriol Vidal, and Sara Price alongside Sean Berriman – the D7X-R will face over 80 hours of intense competitive driving across some 5,000km of timed stages in the unforgiving desert landscape. Under the guidance of newly appointed Team Principal Ian James, the squad is prepared to push both human and machine to their absolute limits.
Built from the OCTA, Ready for Anything
Every Defender Dakar D7X-R begins life at Defender’s advanced production facility in Nitra, Slovakia, retaining the D7x body architecture, transmission, driveline, and 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine of the production Defender OCTA – the most capable production Defender ever built. FIA regulations for the new Stock category ensure these key elements remain untouched, while the D7X-R benefits from a suite of competition-focused upgrades tailored to the extreme demands of rally-raid racing.
“The Defender Dakar D7X-R is the toughest Defender ever built,” says Mark Cameron, Managing Director, Defender. “It carries the same core architecture as the OCTA but has been engineered to endure the harshest conditions on the planet. Dakar pushes everything to the limit, and this car is designed to showcase the Defender’s unrivalled capability and robustness in a true adventure environment.”
Extreme Engineering for Extreme Conditions
While the D7X-R retains the core architecture of the OCTA, every other element has been optimized for desert performance:
- Wider track and raised ride height increase ground clearance for tackling dunes and rough terrain.
- 35-inch tires and extended wheel arches deliver a bold stance while accommodating the terrain-specific modifications.
- A 550-litre rear fuel tank ensures endurance over ultra-long stages exceeding 800km.
- Front and rear bodywork revisions improve approach and departure angles without compromising Defender design DNA.
- Enhanced under-floor protection shields vital components from harsh impacts.
The suspension system, developed in collaboration with BILSTEIN, elevates the OCTA’s kinematic principles with performance dampers: a single coil-over setup at the front and parallel twin dampers at the rear. The system handles extra fuel weight while preserving ride and control across punishing terrain.
Even the cooling package has been overhauled: a single large radiator, four high-performance 12V fans, bonnet venting, and sand-proof particle filters maintain optimal performance in extreme heat, while light-pod accessories and cabin intakes support navigation in the harshest conditions.
Rally-Specific Innovations
The D7X-R is designed for both endurance and agility:
- Eight-speed automatic gearbox with revised final drive ratio maximizes torque at low speeds.
- Rally-spec brakes with vented discs, six-piston front, and four-piston rear calipers ensure stopping power under heavy load.
- A bespoke motorsport control unit manages electronics, while a newly developed Flight Mode optimizes torque delivery during jumps, protecting the driveline.
- FIA-approved navigation and heads-up display systems provide essential data, while driver-specific seating ensures comfort during extended stages.
Onboard essentials include three spare wheels, eight litres of water, integrated hydraulic jacks, tools, and critical spare parts, all securely mounted to meet the demands of desert racing.
Design Inspired by the Desert
The D7X-R sports a new ‘Geopalette’ livery, blending sand, stone, and earth tones with a hint of Aqua to reflect rare desert waters. This striking visual identity emphasizes Defender’s connection to extreme environments while standing out on the world stage.
Looking Ahead to Dakar 2026
With over 6,000km of prototype testing completed, the D7X-R is primed for its competitive debut on 3 January in Saudi Arabia. Defender Rally’s drivers and crew are ready to tackle the ultimate test of endurance, skill, and mechanical precision.
Ian James, Team Principal, concludes: “Dakar is a true adventure – dunes, heat, and unrelenting competition. The D7X-R has been built to face these extremes. With our world-class partners and top-tier drivers, we are ready to take on this incredible challenge and demonstrate what the Defender brand is truly capable of.”
The Defender Dakar D7X-R is more than a rally car; it’s a statement of engineering excellence, adventure heritage, and unwavering capability – a production-based machine built to conquer the extremes of motorsport and the world.
