Gqeberha & Johannesburg, September 2025 – Isuzu Motors South Africa (IMSAf) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability with the planting of nearly 4,800 spekboom trees at two community schools in Gqeberha and Johannesburg. This effort forms a key part of the company’s celebration of Arbor Week and aligns directly with the ISUZU Environmental Vision 2050, which outlines five long-term sustainability aspirations.
Renowned as South Africa’s “carbon sponge,” the spekboom is celebrated for its remarkable carbon sequestration properties. The newly established plantations are expected to offset roughly 793,000 tons of carbon emissions—the equivalent of all employee air travel generated during the 2024/25 financial year. Beyond carbon reduction, the project enhances green spaces for learners and promotes environmental awareness among employees and the wider community.
“Our commitment to environmental sustainability extends beyond compliance; it’s about fostering education and awareness among our employees and communities,” says Celestin Ndhlovu, Executive Vice President Corporate Services at Isuzu Motors South Africa. “We believe it is our responsibility to nurture the environment we live in and create a lasting legacy for future generations.”

The initiative was carried out in partnership with the Giving Them Wings Foundation, with tree-planting events hosted at Khulile Primary School in Motherwell, Gqeberha, and Mikateka Primary School in Tembisa, Johannesburg. Together, these schools received 2,727 spekboom trees, while the remaining trees were distributed to IMSAf employees for planting at their homes and in local communities—ensuring the initiative extends well beyond the workplace.
By enabling employees and their families to participate, IMSAf is contributing to the greening of urban areas, where space is often limited, while simultaneously raising awareness of global climate challenges.
The Giving Them Wings Foundation, a non-profit organisation, focuses on creating sustainable living solutions and empowering communities through environmental education, recycling initiatives, and food gardening projects. Their collaborative approach promotes a culture of sustainability and responsible stewardship of natural resources.
Through this Arbor Week initiative, Isuzu Motors South Africa demonstrates that corporate sustainability can be both meaningful and inclusive, combining tangible carbon offsetting with community empowerment and long-term environmental stewardship.
