June 2025 marks a landmark moment for Isuzu UK as the pick-up specialist celebrates a remarkable milestone — the sale of its 125,000th vehicle since entering the British market in 1987. From the rugged off-road legacy of the Trooper to the class-defining D-Max and its electric future, Isuzu’s journey through the UK landscape is a story of evolution, resilience, and innovation.

Forged in Capability: The Early Years

When Isuzu arrived in the UK in 1987, it did so with a bang — launching the now-legendary Trooper, a model that would go on to sell over 40,000 units and lay the foundation for Isuzu’s reputation as a producer of durable, capable 4x4s.

The second-generation Trooper, introduced in 1992, became a cult favourite among off-roading enthusiasts. With switchable 4WD, a choice of three trims — Standard, Duty, and Citation — and configurations to suit both family and commercial use, it showcased Isuzu’s ability to blend functionality with a measure of refinement.

That same year, Isuzu took an unexpected turn — and captured imaginations — with the turbocharged Piazza coupé. A Lotus-tuned suspension and a sleek three-door design made the Piazza a short-lived yet unforgettable chapter in Isuzu UK’s story, proving the brand could deliver performance as well as practicality.

The Pick-Up Professionals Take Shape

In 1988, Isuzu’s true calling began to emerge. The launch of the TF pick-up introduced British buyers to the rugged dependability that would define the brand. Offered in multiple cab configurations and with true workhorse credentials — 1-tonne payload and 2-tonne towing — the TF was the first signal that Isuzu was serious about commercial utility.

This momentum continued with the arrival of the Rodeo in 2004, the first diesel pick-up in the UK to offer an automatic transmission. It delivered up to 3 tonnes of towing capacity and came in various trims, from the practical Denver to the premium Denver Max LE, showcasing Isuzu’s growing understanding of lifestyle appeal alongside workhorse reliability.

Full Throttle: The Rise of the D-Max

2012 saw the arrival of a new icon: the Isuzu D-Max. Refined yet rugged, powerful yet practical, the D-Max quickly became a favourite with farmers, builders, and adventurers alike. With a 3.5-tonne towing capacity and over a tonne payload, it was built to handle Britain’s toughest tasks — and excel in them.

From 2017 onward, the D-Max benefitted from a more efficient 1.9-litre engine, reducing emissions while still delivering 164ps and 360Nm of torque. In 2021, the third-generation D-Max took things further with bold styling, cutting-edge infotainment, and advanced safety systems, reinforcing Isuzu’s commitment to progress.

Now in 2025, the New Isuzu D-Max arrives, fully loaded with innovations like Rough Terrain Mode, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, wireless infotainment across the range, and a reversing camera as standard — all while retaining the mechanical muscle that has made the name legendary.

Driving Innovation: The Electric Future

Isuzu UK’s milestone year also marks a giant leap forward with the reveal of the New D-Max EV — the first fully electric commercial pick-up in Europe with a 1-tonne payload, 3.5-tonne towing capability, and permanent 4WD. Due in early 2026, the D-Max EV will combine the brand’s trademark capability with zero-emissions driving — a fitting evolution for a marque known for dependable progress.

Award-Winning Recognition

Isuzu’s ascent to become the UK’s second-largest pick-up brand — boasting a 17.5% market share — is no accident. The D-Max has consistently dominated award circuits, with accolades including:

  • Company Car & Van Pick-Up of the Year (2022–2025)
  • What Van? Pick-Up of the Year (2022, 2023)
  • Trade Van Driver Vehicle of the Year (2024)
