South Africa’s leading road safety recognition platform has officially opened entries for 2026, marking the return of the Fleet Safety Awards for its fifth consecutive year. What began in 2022 as a focused industry initiative has steadily evolved into a national benchmark for recognising meaningful contributions to safer roads, and the 2026 edition is positioned to be its most influential yet.
The opening of entries comes at a time when South Africa continues to face a road fatality rate significantly higher than the global average. Against this backdrop, the Fleet Safety Awards serve a critical purpose: to highlight the fleet operators, managers, drivers, and organisations who are actively reshaping road safety outcomes through measurable action rather than intention alone.
MasterDrive CEO Eugene Herbert says the initiative continues to grow in both reach and relevance as the industry matures. “The Fleet Safety Awards is one of the leading initiatives promoting safer roads in South Africa. Year-on-year, it raises the bar, recognising the organisations and individuals turning road safety from a box-ticking exercise into a demonstration of their genuine commitment to saving lives,” he explains.
For 2026, one of the most significant developments is the expansion of the Sustainability Innovation Award. Previously limited to mobility-specific solutions, the category now welcomes any product, service, or innovation that enables fleet operators to achieve more sustainable outcomes, regardless of the sector it originates from. This shift broadens participation and invites contributions from across the wider business and technology landscape, reflecting the increasingly interconnected nature of modern fleet operations.
The Awards continue to emphasise inclusivity, ensuring recognition is not confined to large corporations or dominant industry players. The full category structure spans individual driver performance, organisational excellence, fleet management leadership, bus operations, and truck stop development, among others. The message remains consistent: any organisation operating a fleet and actively improving its safety performance is eligible to participate.
Herbert reinforces this open approach, noting that the initiative is designed to recognise commitment at every scale. “If road safety is a priority for you, this is your platform, irrespective of whether you operate a small regional fleet or a large national corporation.”
The 2026 programme also features a total prize pool exceeding R250 000, alongside a redesigned entry portal aimed at simplifying submissions while ensuring judges receive clear, structured information to support fair and informed evaluations. A refreshed judging panel combines returning experts with new voices, blending institutional experience with fresh perspective.
The momentum behind the Awards continues to build on strong engagement from previous years. In 2025, winners represented a diverse cross-section of sectors including mining, logistics, academia, passenger transport, and corporate fleets, with the ceremony attended by more than 200 guests and reaching an audience of over 74 000 through the broader campaign.
As entries open for 2026, Herbert’s message to the industry is clear and direct. “Every effort committed to promoting road safety makes a difference and should be recognised. Be part of that legacy.”
