Dacia has stepped into the world of extreme endurance sport alongside Dr Sarah Ruggins, backing her ambitious One Way North 2026 (OWN2026) world record attempt. The challenge will see Ruggins ride 6,500km across Europe, from Tarifa in southern Spain all the way to the Arctic Circle at North Cape in Norway, in one continuous push that blurs the line between athletic performance and human perseverance.
Across 10 countries and more than 52,000 metres of climbing, Ruggins will spend up to 22 hours a day in the saddle. Sleep, in this carefully calibrated ordeal, becomes a scarce resource, limited to just 90 minutes each night over a 16-day period. The route is as unforgiving as it is iconic, exposing her to extreme swings in climate, from +35°C Mediterranean heat to sub-zero Arctic conditions that strip away comfort and test focus with every pedal stroke.
At stake is the outright record of 16 days, 20 hours and 59 minutes, set in 2019. Beating it would not only etch her name into endurance cycling history, but also place her among a rare group of women who have claimed records traditionally held by men, reshaping expectations of what is physically and mentally possible.
Ruggins’ path to this point reads less like a conventional sporting biography and more like a study in reconstruction. A former academic researcher and investment professional, she only began cycling in 2023 after a decade-long recovery from a severe neurological illness that left her nearly paralysed. Having had to relearn how to walk and regain the use of her hands, she returned to movement in its most elemental form and rapidly progressed to world-record performances, including the fastest return ride across Britain and the fastest women’s 1,000-mile time ever recorded.
Her approach to endurance is defined not by exclusivity, but by accessibility. That philosophy aligns closely with Dacia’s emphasis on practical capability and enabling exploration without unnecessary complexity. For OWN2026, Dacia will provide support vehicles that will shadow the entire journey, handling logistics, transporting equipment, and offering essential rest and medical support. During training, a dedicated vehicle will assist Ruggins as she prepares across varied terrain and conditions, ensuring the system behind the athlete is as resilient as the effort itself.
Speaking about the challenge, Dr Sarah Ruggins said: “OWN2026 is about pushing my limits over a sustained period and seeing what’s possible. Having the right support around you is essential, and Dacia’s role in helping make this attempt possible – both in training and on the road – is hugely important.”
She added: “Adventure is what you make it. For me, it’s about pushing outside your comfort zone and taking on something new. We may be going after world records, but we are a group of everyday people, and we want to show people that they can take on their own adventures, too.”
For Dacia, the partnership reflects a shared belief in enabling real-world capability. Lina Ribeiro, Dacia Brand Director for the UK, said: “Sarah’s determination and resilience are what make this challenge so inspiring. At Dacia, we’re proud to support her by providing the practical backing needed to take on something of this scale, both in training and throughout the journey itself.”
Beyond the record attempt, OWN2026 carries a broader purpose. The initiative will raise funds for World Bicycle Relief, continuing Ruggins’ commitment to using endurance sport as a platform for impact beyond personal achievement. To date, she and her team have raised more than £100,000 for small charities, reinforcing the idea that extreme challenges can generate tangible change far beyond the road.
The journey will begin on 5 June 2026 in Tarifa, Spain, before tracing a relentless line north through Europe to its final destination at North Cape, where land meets Arctic sea and endurance meets its symbolic edge. In between lies a test not only of distance, but of discipline, recovery, and the quiet mechanics of human will sustained over thousands of kilometres.
