In 2024, Kia Picanto celebrates a significant milestone—its 20th anniversary. As Kia’s third oldest model still in production in the UK, following the Sportage and Sorento, the Picanto’s journey has been nothing short of impressive. This year, Kia reaffirms its commitment to the A-segment with a major update to the Picanto, ensuring it remains a top contender in the competitive compact car market.
The year 2004 was memorable for many reasons. Greece triumphed in European football, Shrek 2 topped the box office, and the Scissor Sisters’ debut album became a best-seller in the UK. Amidst these cultural milestones, Kia launched the first-generation Picanto in the UK, marking the beginning of an enduring legacy.
Over the past two decades, Kia has sold over 260,000 Picantos in the UK, spanning three all-new generations and four mid-life facelifts. Initially launched in South Korea in 2003 as the Kia ‘Morning,’ the city car was renamed ‘Picanto’ for the European market, adding a touch of spice to the A-segment.
Despite being the smallest vehicle in Kia’s UK lineup, the Picanto has consistently exceeded expectations in sales performance. In August 2023, it surpassed a quarter of a million lifetime sales in the UK, making it the second best-selling model in Kia UK’s history, trailing only the Sportage. In 2024, the Picanto holds the position of the fourth best-selling model in the UK, demonstrating its enduring popularity.
The Picanto’s success can be attributed to its appeal in the A-segment, a market that remains a focal point for Kia. In 2024, the Picanto boasts a market share of over 25 percent in its segment, ranking as the third best-selling car overall and second in retail sales. This continued momentum is a testament to the Picanto’s versatility, affordability, and appeal to a wide range of drivers.
As the Picanto celebrates its 20th year in the UK, it undergoes a significant mid-life update, further enhancing its appeal. The new Picanto features a striking, aggressive design, along with improvements in onboard technology, safety systems, comfort, and refinement. This makes it the most advanced iteration of the model to date, while retaining the fun and versatile character of its predecessors.

A Brief History of Kia’s A-Segment Hero
The first-generation Kia Picanto debuted in the UK in 2004, quickly becoming a hit with its cute and quirky styling and affordable price point. A minor facelift in 2007 refreshed its appearance, but it was the 2009 scrappage scheme that truly cemented the Picanto’s place in the UK market. During the scheme, which ran from May 2009 to March 2010, Kia sold over 22,000 Picantos, a 348 percent increase over the previous period. This period remains the Picanto’s most successful sales period to date.
In 2010, Kia extended its renowned seven-year, 100,000-mile warranty to the Picanto, enhancing its value proposition. The second generation, launched in 2011, introduced a more modern and angular design, with a three-door model available for the first time. Designed at Kia’s European Design Centre in Frankfurt under Peter Schreyer’s guidance, the new Picanto focused on efficiency and affordability, with most models emitting 100g/km CO2 or less, making them road tax and congestion charge exempt.
The second-generation Picanto garnered numerous awards for its low starting price, efficient powertrains, and refined driving experience. A mild facelift in 2015 further elevated its standard equipment and introduced an 11-model range to suit diverse customer needs.
In 2017, the third-generation Picanto arrived, featuring new engines, advanced design, and significant interior enhancements. This iteration brought technologies from larger, more expensive Kia models to the A-segment, solidifying the Picanto’s reputation as a leader in its class.
The Latest Picanto: A Testament to Kia’s Commitment
The latest Picanto, now on sale, exemplifies Kia’s ability to adapt to changing trends while maintaining its unique design philosophy. With a striking new appearance inspired by Kia’s premium models, the new Picanto continues to impress. Paul Philpott, President and CEO of Kia UK Limited, highlights the Picanto’s enduring appeal, stating, “Throughout the past 20 years, the Picanto has established itself as a firm favorite among a growing number of customers. This latest version of the Picanto is no exception, and it continues to impress in the same areas as its predecessors. The Picanto is a statement of our continued commitment to the A-segment, too. We know that there remains a significant appetite for small, lightweight, cost-efficient vehicles, so we’re investing in this important segment of the market to satisfy this demand.”
The new Picanto offers two engine options and a choice of five well-equipped specification levels, including a new ‘Shadow’ special edition. Available for order at all Kia dealers, the first UK deliveries are set to begin in July.
As the Kia Picanto celebrates 20 years, it stands as a testament to Kia’s innovation, adaptability, and commitment to providing affordable, high-quality vehicles in the A-segment. The Picanto’s journey from its debut in 2004 to its current iteration reflects Kia’s dedication to meeting the evolving needs of drivers, ensuring the Picanto remains a beloved choice for years to come.
