This International Stress Awareness Week, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has revealed alarming new research showing that one in four UK van drivers experienced mental health issues in the past year. The study underscores the growing pressures on drivers balancing demanding workloads and the rising cost of living, prompting urgent calls for prioritising wellbeing in the industry.
A Workforce Under Pressure
According to the survey of 1,000 UK van drivers, 63% report feeling stressed or overwhelmed at least once a month. Key contributors include long working hours and the ongoing cost of living crisis. More strikingly, 39% admit to feeling overwhelmed by their work/life balance on a weekly basis—a notable increase from 30% last year.
The research also revealed a stark consequence of these pressures: 75% of van drivers have turned down work in the past 12 months due to mental health concerns, with a third of these drivers missing out on at least one working week as a result.
Cost of Living and Overwork Top the List of Stressors
Van drivers cited the cost of living as their leading source of stress (36%), closely followed by challenges related to work/life balance (28%) and overworking (27%). The survey highlights a sector grappling with both financial pressures and demanding job expectations—a combination that can quickly take a toll on mental health.
Industry Response: Prioritising Wellbeing
Craig Cavanagh, Mental Health First Aider at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, emphasises the importance of proactive support:
“Driver wellbeing has always been a priority of ours, and we encourage van drivers and companies to take the issue seriously. We understand the struggles faced by our customers as they navigate long hours and cost of living pressures. This International Stress Awareness Week, we’re shining a light on the impact these challenges can have on mental health and urging drivers to prioritise their wellbeing.”
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is using the week to not only raise awareness but also encourage the industry to take tangible steps in supporting drivers—from flexible schedules to accessible mental health resources.
A Call to Action for the Sector
As the transport and logistics sector continues to grow, the wellbeing of drivers must remain front and centre. Stress and mental health challenges are not just personal issues—they impact safety, productivity, and the broader sustainability of the industry.
This research sends a clear message: prioritising mental health is no longer optional. For UK van drivers, acknowledging stress, seeking support, and establishing better work/life balance are essential steps toward a healthier, more resilient workforce.
