Leatherhead, 8 May 2024 – The Hyundai IONIQ 5 N has captured the title of the world’s premier electric performance car, according to the latest evaluation by CAR Magazine. The acclaimed publication named the Hyundai model as the standout winner in its first comprehensive hot EV test since 2022, conducted at the renowned Nürburgring circuit in Germany and on nearby roads.
In a fierce competition featuring seven electric vehicles, including both traditional premium brands and cutting-edge EV specialists, the IONIQ 5 N distinguished itself, even against contenders with much steeper price tags. Among them was a hypercar listed over £2 million, yet CAR’s experts hailed the Hyundai as the best purchase of the bunch, likening its exhilarating driving experience to that of legendary combustion-engine sports cars.
Editor Ben Miller of CAR Magazine expressed his enthusiasm for the evolving quality of electric vehicles. “The field has improved dramatically over the past two years. The IONIQ 5 N is a thrilling tribute to the iconic all-wheel-drive sports hatches of yesteryears and today,” he noted. Miller praised the vehicle for its dynamic driving style, precise handling, and chassis design that mimics the auditory thrill of a turbocharged petrol engine.
Built on Hyundai’s Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the IONIQ 5 N incorporates high-performance technology from Hyundai’s N division, enhancing its thrill factor. This model boasts an electric motor that can reach up to 21,000 RPM, delivering 609 PS normally and 650 PS with the N Grin Boost activated, which sharpens acceleration for bursts of up to 10 seconds. The vehicle can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.4 seconds and achieve a top speed of 161 mph on racetracks.
Further advancements include a reinforced steering column and an Electronic Controlled Suspension that adapts stiffness based on the driving mode. Notable features are the N Pedal for sharp turn-ins and increased throttle responsiveness, variable N Torque Distribution, and the N e-shift, which simulates an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The IONIQ 5 N also excels in auditory engagement, employing N Active Sound+ technology to enhance the driving experience with a compelling sound profile. Since its launch, the model has garnered several awards, including the World Performance Car at the World Car Awards and the Car of the Year title from TopGear.com.
