Hyundai is set to make a significant impact at the 102nd Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on June 23, 2024, with a formidable lineup including two 471 kW IONIQ 5 N electric SUVs. These vehicles are poised to challenge the Electric Production SUV/Crossover record in Colorado, showcasing Hyundai’s dedication to innovation and performance in electric vehicle technology.
Till Wartenberg, head of Hyundai’s N Brand and Motorsport, expressed confidence in the IONIQ 5 N, highlighting its roots in a legacy of technological advancements tested on the demanding slopes of Pikes Peak since 1992. The production-spec IONIQ 5 N aims to give consumers a glimpse of the exceptional capabilities inherent in Hyundai’s electric vehicles.
The race will feature drivers Paul Dallenbach, a seasoned Pikes Peak veteran with eleven wins, including a record-setting performance in 1993, and rookie Ron Zaras, who is making his debut at this prestigious event. Zaras, inspired by the legendary rally film ‘Climb Dance’, expressed his excitement about competing with the support of Hyundai’s experienced team.
In addition to the record attempt, Hyundai will introduce a specially modified IONIQ 5 N to compete before its appearance at the ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring. Experienced drivers Dani Sordo, a World Rally Championship competitor, and four-time Pikes Peak champion Robin Shute will pilot these vehicles.

The IONIQ 5 N has been rigorously tested under extreme conditions and fine-tuned at the Nürburgring Nordschleife to optimize its track performance. It features advanced technologies including structural enhancements, integrated drive axles inspired by the World Rally Championship, enhanced thermal management, N-tuned brakes, and a leading brake regenerative system capable of 0.6 G deceleration.
For compliance with racing regulations, modifications include a Recaro Pro Racer SPA Hans seat, Sabelt six-point HANS compatible seat belts, a roll cage, and a fire suppression system. The vehicle retains its standard configuration in all other respects, with plans for a new Hyundai N livery in the future.
The specifications of the IONIQ 5 N boast a total output of 448 kW, with the potential to reach 478 kW using the N Grin Boost function. It features a 84 kWh battery, rapid charging capabilities, and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 3.25 seconds, with a top speed of 260 km/h.
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, established in 1916, is one of America’s oldest and most challenging motor races. Known as The Race to the Clouds, it features a 20 km course with 156 turns, climbing 1,440 meters to finish at 4,302 meters above sea level. This event continues to be a platform for showcasing cutting-edge vehicle technology and driver skill.
