Durban, 20 August 2024: In a significant milestone for Mahindra South Africa, the company celebrated the assembly of its 20,000th Pik Up model at a special ceremony held at its vehicle assembly facility in Durban. This achievement not only highlights Mahindra’s growing presence in the South African market but also underscores the company’s commitment to long-term investment and growth in the region.
A Momentous Occasion
The event was attended by high-profile dignitaries from both South Africa and India, including the Honourable Shri Prabhat Kumar, High Commissioner of India to South Africa, and Dr. Thelma David, Consul General of India in Durban. The leadership team of Mahindra South Africa, led by CEO Rajesh Gupta, and key executives from AIH Group, Mahindra’s production partner, were also present to mark the occasion.
The highlight of the celebration was the presentation of the 20,000th vehicle—a Pik Up S6 4×4—which symbolizes Mahindra’s journey and success in the South African automotive industry.
A Journey of Growth and Expansion
Mahindra’s assembly operations in South Africa began in May 2018, with a modest goal of producing 2,500 units annually. However, the company quickly exceeded expectations, quadrupling its production output. Initially, the assembly plant focused on single-cab Pik Up models, but over time, it expanded its capabilities to include double-cab and special edition models, such as the popular Karoo Editions.
“The Mahindra Assembly Facility could rightfully be described as the largest and most complex of its kind on the African continent if one considers single-brand facilities that produce a consistent flow of vehicles every month,” said Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa.
Supporting Mahindra’s assembly operations is AIH, a Level 2 BBBEE Empowered company that operates the facility on Mahindra’s behalf. The collaboration between Mahindra and AIH has been instrumental in increasing production output and improving the complexity of the facility’s operations. This partnership has also led to the sharing of valuable intellectual property, further solidifying Mahindra’s global production capabilities.
Looking Ahead: A New Era of Production
In line with its growth strategy, Mahindra is set to embark on the next phase of its journey in South Africa with the construction of a new assembly facility. Scheduled for completion in June 2025, the new 14,000 m² facility will significantly boost Mahindra’s production capacity and further cement the company’s commitment to the South African market.
The new facility will also lead to an expansion of Mahindra’s workforce, increasing the number of employees on the assembly line from the current 90. This expansion reflects Mahindra’s confidence in the future of its operations in South Africa, as well as its dedication to meeting the growing demand for its vehicles.

A Second Home Outside of India
Mahindra’s success in South Africa is a testament to the company’s long-term vision and strategic investments. Since its inception in October 2004, Mahindra South Africa has grown its vehicle range, dealer network, and supporting infrastructure, positioning itself as a major player in the local automotive market.
Mahindra’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. The company has been recognized as the fastest-growing brand in South Africa multiple times, thanks to its innovative approach and strong market presence. The introduction of special edition models like the Karoo Dusk, Dawn, Storm, and Dew, all produced at the Durban assembly facility, has further enhanced Mahindra’s appeal among South African bakkie buyers.
Speaking at the ceremony, Shri Prabhat Kumar highlighted the importance of the growing trade and investment relationship between India and South Africa, with Mahindra serving as a prime example of this successful partnership.
“South Africa’s role as our second home outside of India was emphasized last year when Mahindra unveiled its new global Pik Up concept in South Africa to a global audience,” said Rajesh Gupta. “Mahindra South Africa and its assembly facility will become an important part of the global Pik Up plans, especially with the announcement that Mahindra will continue to produce the current range of bakkies alongside the new model.”
As Mahindra marks its 20th year in South Africa, the company’s achievements and future plans reflect its commitment to the region. With a new assembly facility on the horizon and a continued focus on innovation and growth, Mahindra is poised to strengthen its position in the South African automotive market for years to come.
