Durban, South Africa – 12 August 2025 — Marking a pivotal milestone in its journey through three decades of South African presence, Mahindra South Africa today unveiled its new, purpose-built Vehicle Assembly Facility at the Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone in KwaZulu-Natal. This modern plant not only expands production capacity but also underscores Mahindra’s long-term commitment to local industrial development, quality, and customer-centric innovation.

A Ground-Up Investment to Meet Rising Demand

Since first assembling the iconic Pik Up bakkie in 2018, Mahindra South Africa has established a significant footprint in the local automotive landscape. Now, the new Durban facility, strategically situated near the original assembly site, represents a leap forward — combining enhanced scale, technological sophistication, and operational flexibility. The plant is designed to global manufacturing standards and features cutting-edge quality control systems, expanded production lines, and dedicated zones for bespoke customisation to meet South African buyers’ specific needs.

“This investment responds directly to the growing demand for our Pik Up range,” explains Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa. “Our original facility helped us lay strong foundations, but this new plant allows us to scale production dramatically while maintaining the world-class quality our customers expect.”

Capacity to Power Growth and Localisation

With the capability to assemble over 1,000 Pik Up single- and double-cab models per month, the Durban plant is poised not only to meet current market demand but also to accommodate future growth and new models. Importantly, the facility incorporates flexibility to increase local content — a crucial element in Mahindra’s strategy to foster South Africa’s broader industrial ecosystem.

Mahindra’s global engineering teams have collaborated closely with South African suppliers to explore opportunities for increased localisation, enhancing both supply chain resilience and local economic impact.

Strengthening South Africa’s Role in Mahindra’s Global Strategy

Earlier this year, Mahindra partnered with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) to explore the feasibility of a full-scale manufacturing operation in South Africa. Insights from the Durban facility’s performance will inform this important initiative, underscoring the company’s intention to deepen its investment in the country.

“South Africa is more than a market to us,” adds Rajesh Gupta. “It is a vital manufacturing hub and a key pillar of Mahindra’s international growth strategy. This facility affirms our commitment to job creation, industrial development, and delivering reliable, high-quality vehicles tailored to South African customers.”

Sachin Arolkar, Head of International Operations at Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., emphasises this regional focus: “The Durban plant strengthens our regional manufacturing capabilities and highlights South Africa’s strategic importance within Mahindra’s global network. It’s a clear signal of our long-term investment plans in Africa.”

Market Recognition and Momentum

Mahindra’s local assembly efforts have translated into impressive market success. Since 2018, the brand has ascended into South Africa’s top 10 best-selling automotive brands. Data from naamsa, the industry business council, highlights Mahindra as one of the fastest-growing brands over the past seven years. Most notably, the brand was the fastest-growing overall in the 2024/25 financial year, maintaining strong momentum into 2025.

The Mahindra Pik Up Single Cab, well-regarded for offering the lowest total cost of ownership in its segment, has been a standout performer on local roads — a testament to the brand’s focus on affordability, durability, and value.

A Partnership Built on Collaboration and Skill Development

Dr Dempsey Naidoo, Chairman of AIH Logistics — Mahindra’s local assembly partner — reflects on the shared achievement: “Since 2018, our collaboration has created South Africa’s largest semi knocked-down automotive facility, blending global expertise with local talent. This partnership is a blueprint for success that benefits not only Mahindra but the wider South African economy through job creation and skills development.”

Looking Ahead: Foundations for a Thriving Future

“The new Durban assembly facility reinforces Mahindra’s competitive edge in one of the world’s most dynamic bakkie markets,” concludes Rajesh Gupta. “It lays a strong foundation for sustained growth as we enter our third decade in South Africa, committed to serving customers with vehicles that combine toughness, reliability, and affordability.”

As Mahindra South Africa accelerates production and localisation, the brand’s vision for the future is clear: to be a driving force in the local automotive industry while supporting broader economic progress, job creation, and innovation. This new plant signals not only the maturation of Mahindra’s South African journey but also an exciting new chapter in the company’s global growth story.
