Centurion, South Africa (14 January 2026) – Mahindra has cemented its reputation as one of South Africa’s most popular automotive brands, closing 2025 with a record-breaking 18 097 vehicles sold. This remarkable achievement represents a 40% year-on-year increase, significantly outpacing the overall industry growth of approximately 15%, which has largely recovered to pre-COVID levels.
This stellar performance places Mahindra as the third best-performing volume brand in South Africa for 2025. Historically, the brand has claimed the top spot in three of the past six years and has consistently ranked among the top three fastest-growing brands in the country since 2017, measured by compound annual growth rate (CAGR).
Passenger Vehicles Take Centre Stage
While Mahindra has long been synonymous with its rugged, locally manufactured Pik Up, 2025 marked a new chapter in the brand’s passenger vehicle segment. Sales more than doubled, soaring from 3 969 units in 2024 to 8 085 units in 2025. This growth positions Mahindra as one of the two top performers in the passenger vehicle segment in terms of sales expansion.
The surge in passenger vehicle sales is largely credited to the XUV 3XO and the Scorpio-N. The XUV 3XO has brought advanced technology within reach for more South African drivers, offering features such as a true six-speed automatic transmission and six airbags across all models. The Scorpio-N, meanwhile, has redefined family adventure, combining capability and comfort in a rugged SUV that encourages exploration. Both models were recognised as the Motor Enthusiast’s Choice at consecutive South African Car of the Year events.
A Unique Business Approach
At the heart of Mahindra’s success is its long-term, locally grounded business model. Unlike newer market entrants, Mahindra has invested over two decades in strengthening its dealer network, expanding aftermarket support, and deepening ties to local communities and environmental initiatives.
“Mahindra is here to stay. As we enter our third decade in South Africa, we will double down on our business model of responsible investment, sustainable growth and authentic products with world-class support,” says Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa. “If we continue to focus on these business fundamentals, then the sales success will continue.”
A key example of this commitment is the opening of Mahindra’s new assembly facility in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The state-of-the-art plant is capable of assembling over 1 000 Pik Up units per month, with increased local content and special edition models such as the Pik Up Karoo range. The locally assembled Pik Up single cab ranks among South Africa’s three most popular workhorses, praised for durability, reliability, and low cost of ownership. Recent updates, including a single-mass flywheel, further reduce maintenance costs, ensuring sustained popularity.
In addition, Mahindra opened its largest national warehouse and distribution centre in 2025, supplying parts and components daily to over 100 dealers nationwide, ensuring timely service and support for customers.
Driving Lifestyle and Community Engagement
Beyond sales, Mahindra has emerged as a leader in brand lifestyle and community engagement. The inaugural Mahindra Fusion Fest, a celebration of South African creativity and cultural diversity, attracted over 7 000 attendees, including the Honourable Deputy President Paul Mashatile. The event has set a new benchmark for automotive brand experiences in the country, inspiring similar initiatives across the industry.
Plans for the 2026 Mahindra Fusion Fest are already underway, promising an even more ambitious celebration as Mahindra enters the new year with record-high momentum.
Mahindra’s 2025 success story is a testament not only to strong products but also to a business philosophy rooted in long-term investment, community involvement, and the creation of authentic experiences for South African customers. As the brand continues to expand its footprint, its combination of durability, innovation, and cultural engagement ensures that Mahindra remains firmly in the hearts of drivers across the country.
