In an exciting nod to Britain’s most iconic motoring heritage, Young Driver, the UK’s leading under-17s driver training programme, has launched a brand-new venue at the legendary Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey – once the hallowed home of Top Gear. The move adds a thrilling layer of history and prestige to the company’s mission to create safer, more confident young drivers.
From May 25th, the same circuit that once echoed with the roar of celebrity laps and Stig-fuelled speed runs will now play host to 9 to 17-year-olds mastering the fundamentals of driving – albeit at significantly safer speeds. As part of Young Driver’s ongoing national expansion, Dunsfold is one of ten new venues added to its extensive UK network, which now boasts over 80 training locations.
Swapping Celebrity Laps for Safe Starts
The launch event at Dunsfold gave students more than just a taste of driving; it offered a brush with motoring fame. The very same Suzuki Liana – Top Gear’s original Reasonably Priced Car – was on display, evoking nostalgia and setting the stage for its spiritual successor, the new Suzuki Swift. The dual-controlled Swifts are now the cars of choice for Young Driver’s expertly delivered sessions.
And for a lucky few, the day got even better – with an opportunity to take the wheel of a Porsche 911 around the famed track. But while the venue may evoke visions of speed and celebrity spectacle, Young Driver’s programme focuses on cultivating cool-headed competence, not clocking lap times.

Driving Down Accident Rates – And Raising Confidence
There’s serious intent behind the fun. Young Driver’s mission is to instil responsible road habits long before teens get behind the wheel for real. The statistics speak volumes: while one in five newly qualified drivers crashes within six months of passing their test, fewer than 4% of Young Driver graduates do the same – a reduction in accident risk of over 80%.
“Dunsfold is a dream location for a driving school,” says Casey O’Loughlin, Young Driver’s senior field manager. “We might be on a track known for speed, but our emphasis is firmly on skill, safety and control. It’s about preparing young people thoroughly and thoughtfully – and that preparation pays off.”
He adds: “The confidence boost is incredible to witness. Parents are often stunned to see their children reverse parking by the end of their first lesson. And for the kids, there’s real pride in the responsibility. Plus, let’s be honest – who wouldn’t want to say they’ve driven the Top Gear track?”
A National Movement
Dunsfold’s launch is part of Young Driver’s impressive national growth. New venues include Old Trafford in Manchester, South Cerney Airfield in Gloucestershire, and Plumpton Racecourse in East Sussex, among others, ensuring access for more families than ever before.
Sessions are available to young people aged 9 to 17, including those with disabilities. Each lesson is led by a fully qualified instructor and tailored to the student’s level, whether it’s their very first time in the driver’s seat or a continuation of previous experience. Lessons are offered in 30- or 60-minute blocks and must be booked in advance, with prices starting from £46.99.
Driving the Future
With more than 1.5 million lessons delivered to date, Young Driver’s impact is measurable, meaningful and growing. The combination of safety-focused tuition, real-world skill-building and unforgettable experiences is helping to shape a new generation of road users who are better prepared and more responsible than ever.
And now, with Dunsfold added to the list, that journey begins with a bit of motoring magic thrown in.
