In a significant development, WesBank and its CEO, Mr. Ghana Msibi, have been fully exonerated following the dismissal of all fraud charges brought against them earlier this year. The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the senior public prosecutor confirmed the dismissal, stating there was no evidence of any wrongdoing.
The case originated in July when Mr. Emerald van Zyl alleged that WesBank had overcharged clients on vehicle finance accounts due to incorrect interest calculations. This accusation led to a formal complaint lodged at the Bellville Police Station in Cape Town.
After a thorough investigation, the SAPS and the prosecutor concluded there was no merit to the claims. Lebogang Gaoaketse, WesBank’s Head of Marketing and Communication, expressed relief at the resolution:
“Following their investigation into the fraud charges filed by Mr. van Zyl, the SAPS and the prosecutor in the case have elected not to pursue any fraud charges against WesBank or Mr. Msibi due to the absence of any reasonable evidence of any crime committed.”

A Call for Informed Financial Decisions
In light of the allegations, Gaoaketse urged consumers to remain vigilant about the sources of their financial advice.
“In finance and finance-related matters, it is vital to base your decisions on accurate and reliable information. Always seek advice from credible sources with the relevant qualifications and a proven history of assisting consumers. It is also important to check if they are registered with the appropriate industry or regulatory bodies,” he stated.
Highlighting the risks posed by unverified financial advisors, Gaoaketse warned against individuals or entities driven by personal agendas, cautioning clients to avoid falling prey to misinformation.
