Volvo Cars has expanded its electrified lineup with the introduction of the all-new XC70, the company’s first long-range plug-in hybrid. With an impressive all-electric range of over 200 km under the CLTC testing cycle—the longest of any Volvo plug-in hybrid to date—the XC70 is designed for families seeking comfort, versatility, and sustainability without compromising on performance.
Built on Volvo’s new Scalable Modular Architecture (SMA) platform, the XC70 reflects the brand’s commitment to electrification while offering the flexibility of a plug-in hybrid. Initially available for pre-order in China, Volvo plans to introduce the model in Europe shortly, responding to growing demand for longer-range electrified vehicles.
“The new XC70 is a very attractive choice for customers who want the benefits of electric driving but are not yet ready to go fully electric,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. “It is a cornerstone of our electrified product portfolio, a bridge to fully electric cars, and it will strengthen our presence in the world’s largest car market.”
Efficient, Flexible and Powerful
The XC70 combines long-range electric capability with a high-performance combustion engine, enabling journeys of over 1,200 km without refuelling. Fast charging technology allows the battery to reach 80 per cent capacity in just 23 minutes, while bi-directional charging lets the car power other electric devices—perfect for outdoor adventures or camping trips.
By offering an extended electric range and minimal tailpipe emissions for everyday commutes, the XC70 provides a cost-effective, environmentally conscious driving experience while retaining the freedom and flexibility of a hybrid for longer trips.
Scandinavian Design Meets Modern Functionality
Purposeful and elegant, the XC70 embodies Volvo’s modern Scandinavian design philosophy. Sculpted lines flow from front to rear, creating a sense of calm confidence. A gently tapered roof and defined shoulder give the SUV a solid yet dynamic presence.
At the front, a shield-like closed grille—mirroring Volvo’s fully electric models—is complemented by an active grille shutter that optimises aerodynamics, cabin climate, and cooling, enhancing energy efficiency and extending driving range. At the rear, C-shaped taillights integrate seamlessly into the rear glass, combining style with functionality.
Premium Comfort and Everyday Versatility
Inside, the XC70 offers a spacious, high-quality cabin designed for comfort and practicality. Passengers enjoy smart storage solutions, premium materials, and an interior that reflects timeless Scandinavian design. Every detail—from the media switches to the sound system—has been carefully tuned to create a harmonious, immersive environment.
The XC70’s robust chassis, balanced steering, and all-wheel-drive capability make it equally adept on highways and more challenging terrain, while large wheels and high ground clearance ensure confidence in every journey.

Smart Connectivity for a Modern Lifestyle
A fast, intuitive infotainment system keeps drivers connected and informed. A 12.3-inch digital driver display and a 15.4-inch free-standing centre display provide easy access to navigation and vehicle functions, while an optional 92-inch augmented reality head-up display adds an immersive cockpit experience.
AI-powered voice control, remote cabin pre-conditioning, and over-the-air software updates ensure that the XC70 remains both convenient and continuously up to date.
Safety at the Core
Volvo’s Safe Space Technology underscores the XC70’s commitment to safety. Advanced radars, cameras, and sensors continuously monitor the surroundings, supporting drivers in avoiding collisions. Features such as door opening alerts, automatic lane change assist, Park Pilot Assist, and active navigation support enhance confidence on every journey, especially in busy urban environments.
“While not yet confirmed for South Africa, the XC70 exemplifies our approach to electrification—offering choice, flexibility, and a seamless transition for customers on their journey towards a fully electric future,” commented Grant Locke, MD of Volvo Car South Africa.
Looking Ahead
With production already underway and pre-orders open in China, the XC70 is poised to strengthen Volvo’s position in the rapidly growing plug-in hybrid segment. Its blend of long-range electric driving, premium comfort, Scandinavian design, and advanced safety makes it a compelling choice for families and drivers seeking a versatile, sustainable, and confident driving experience.
