Volvo is preparing to write its next South African chapter in electric luxury with the arrival of the all-new ES90 in the first quarter of 2026. Already recognised globally for its contemporary design language and advanced electric architecture, the ES90 will become the newest flagship sedan in Volvo Car South Africa’s expanding battery-electric portfolio.
With its launch, Volvo’s local all-electric range will grow to six models, underlining the brand’s long-term commitment to electrification, sustainability, and modern premium mobility. The ES90 is positioned not as a loud statement, but as a confident one: elegant, considered, and unmistakably Volvo in its approach to luxury.
A new electric flagship for South Africa
Designed to appeal to buyers who value refinement over excess, the ES90 blends a clean, sculpted exterior with an interior focused on calm, comfort, and intuitive driver interaction. Its minimalist cabin design places an emphasis on high-quality sustainable materials, advanced technology, and a sense of space that feels deliberate rather than decorative.
When it arrives locally, the ES90 will be offered in three carefully curated trim levels: Core, Plus, and Ultra. Each grade is designed to deliver a distinct balance of comfort, technology, and luxury, although South African customers will initially be introduced to the model exclusively in flagship Ultra specification.
Core: a strong foundation
The ES90 Core establishes a comprehensive baseline, offering a level of standard equipment that already aligns with expectations of a premium electric sedan. Four-zone climate control and an advanced air quality system ensure a consistently comfortable cabin environment, while a panoramic glass roof brings natural light into the interior and enhances the sense of openness.
The cabin is trimmed in eco-conscious Nordico upholstery, paired with Dark Matter décor finishes that reinforce the ES90’s modern aesthetic. Power-adjustable front seats with two-way lumbar support are standard, as is seat heating for both front occupants. Practicality and ease of use are addressed through features such as a power-operated tailgate, rear-view camera, rain-sensing wipers, head-up display, and Park Assist Pilot.
Safety remains central to the Core specification. Standard driver assistance systems include Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert, Lane Keeping Aid, Run-off Road Mitigation, Collision Avoidance and Mitigation, and a driver understanding system designed to monitor attentiveness. Passive safety features are equally comprehensive, with multiple airbags, Side Impact Protection System airbags, whiplash protection for the front seats, and ISOFIX mountings for the outer rear seats.
Plus: elevating comfort and customisation
The ES90 Plus builds on the strong Core foundation, introducing additional comfort, personalisation options, and premium-focused enhancements. An upgraded air purification system with an advanced air cleaner further improves cabin air quality, while customers gain access to a broader range of upholstery choices.
In addition to standard Nordico, buyers can opt for ventilated Nordico or Nappa leather upholstery, with a wider colour palette that includes White, Fog Melange with White, Cardamom, and Charcoal. Front seats are upgraded with four-way lumbar support and cushion extensions, improving long-distance comfort, while rear-seat ventilation becomes available as an option.
Ambient lighting is enhanced through High-level interior illumination, replacing the Mid-level system used in the Core. Décor trim choices expand to include Birch and Light Ash, allowing for greater personal expression. The Plus also introduces a power-adjustable steering column, and offers optional upgrades such as a 360-degree parking camera and Adaptive Cruise Control with Pilot Assist as part of a package.
Ultra: the full expression of electric luxury
At the top of the range, the ES90 Ultra represents the most refined and fully realised version of Volvo’s electric luxury sedan. Building on the Plus specification, the Ultra adds a suite of features aimed at enhancing comfort, privacy, and executive appeal.
Exterior enhancements include tinted windows, laminated side and rear glass, an electrochromic panoramic roof, and power-release doors with soft-close functionality. Inside, the Ultra stands alone as the only variant available with Zinc Tailored Wool Blend upholstery, reinforcing its focus on natural, high-quality materials.
Front seats gain power-adjustable side bolsters and a massage function, while rear passengers benefit from a power rear-seat recliner and a dedicated luxury armrest. Lighting and visibility are further improved with HD headlamps and standard headlamp cleaning, while the 360-degree parking camera, optional on the Plus, is included as standard equipment.
Driving the next chapter
For Volvo Car South Africa, the ES90 represents more than just another model introduction. It is a statement of intent as the brand continues its transition towards an all-electric future.
“Bringing the ES90 to South Africa has been a long-anticipated moment,” said Grant Locke, Managing Director of Volvo Car South Africa. “It represents our vision of modern luxury and driving enjoyment, and we cannot wait for customers here to experience it for themselves as the next chapter of our product journey unfolds.”
Further information regarding pricing, final specifications, and powertrain options will be confirmed closer to the local launch. What is clear, however, is that when the ES90 arrives in early 2026, it will do so as a confident new benchmark for electric luxury in the South African market, initially offered in its most complete and compelling Ultra form.
