Volvo is redefining electric mobility with the introduction of the new Volvo ES90, the brand’s most advanced fully electric vehicle yet. Powered by cutting-edge 800-volt technology, the ES90 is designed to go farther and charge faster than any electric Volvo before, offering unparalleled efficiency, performance, and sustainability.
Revolutionary Charging and Range
The ES90’s 800V architecture represents a significant leap forward in electric vehicle technology. This high-voltage system enables rapid charging capabilities, allowing the ES90 to gain up to 300 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes when using a 350kW fast charger. With an impressive total range of up to 700 kilometres (WLTP cycle), the ES90 ensures that long-distance travel is more convenient than ever.
This advancement is made possible by a completely new battery management system, which optimises charging efficiency and performance. The ES90’s system reduces the time required to charge from 10 to 80 per cent by up to 30 per cent, cutting it down to just 20 minutes—thanks in part to Volvo’s collaboration with Breathe Battery Technologies.
Optimised Performance with 800V Technology
Volvo’s 800V platform doesn’t just improve charging speeds; it also enhances overall vehicle efficiency and performance. Compared to traditional 400V systems, the ES90’s upgraded components—including its battery cells, e-motors, inverter, and climate control—operate at a higher voltage, delivering more power with reduced energy loss. This results in:
- Greater Efficiency: Higher voltage reduces heat generation, ensuring a more stable and efficient power flow.
- Enhanced Driving Dynamics: Lighter e-motors and optimised components contribute to improved acceleration and handling.
- Increased Reliability: A robust thermal management system prevents overheating, maintaining peak performance even under demanding conditions.
Anders Bell, Volvo’s Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, emphasises the significance of this technology: “Our 800V technology marks another significant technological upgrade for our customers as we move towards full electrification. It makes our electric cars even more efficient, helps you charge your electric Volvo faster, and go farther on a single charge.”

Sustainability at Its Core
Beyond performance, the ES90 underscores Volvo’s commitment to sustainability. The model incorporates a range of recycled and natural materials, reducing its environmental footprint while maintaining the brand’s hallmark luxury and quality.
- Recycled Metals: 29% of all aluminium and 18% of all steel in the ES90 are sourced from recycled materials.
- Sustainable Interiors: 16% of the ES90’s polymers and bio-based materials contribute to a more eco-friendly cabin.
- FSC-Certified Wood: The interior wood panels are responsibly sourced, ensuring ethical material use.
Additionally, the ES90 features Volvo’s Battery Passport, a blockchain-based tool that provides transparency in the sourcing of key battery materials such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, and graphite. This initiative enhances customer confidence in Volvo’s ethical supply chain while highlighting the ES90’s overall CO2 footprint.
The Future of Electric Volvo
The Volvo ES90 is set to make its global debut on 5 March, marking a new chapter in the brand’s electrification journey. As Volvo continues its transition toward a fully electric lineup, the ES90 stands as a testament to innovation, performance, and sustainability.
