In a significant recognition of dedication and innovation in energy management, Reabetsoe Kgoedi, an Environmental Sustainability Technical Specialist at Volkswagen Group Africa, has been named runner-up in the prestigious Energy Professional of the Year Awards, organized by the Southern African Energy Efficiency Confederation (SAEEC) in Johannesburg. This accolade not only highlights Kgoedi’s individual achievements but also underscores Volkswagen’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship at its Kariega plant, where the iconic Volkswagen Polo and Vivo are manufactured.

A Commitment to Energy Efficiency
Kgoedi’s journey in energy management began over a decade ago, spanning various industries before culminating in her pivotal role at Volkswagen. Since 2010, under her guidance, the Kariega facility has achieved an impressive 54% reduction in energy consumption, a feat that reflects both her technical acumen and the collaborative efforts of her team. This substantial decrease in energy usage is a testament to the effectiveness of the energy-saving projects implemented under her watch.

Key initiatives include process optimization, the identification and rectification of leaks in compressed air systems, and the installation of energy-efficient lighting and equipment. Kgoedi emphasizes the importance of continuously monitoring energy consumption and fostering a culture of awareness around energy usage, particularly concerning the operation of air conditioning systems. “We are consistently monitoring processes and influencing mindsets towards energy consumption,” she states, illustrating her proactive approach to sustainability.

Aligning with Global Initiatives
Kgoedi’s initiatives are aligned with Volkswagen’s ambitious Go to Zero strategy, which aims to create a zero-carbon emissions factory by 2030. This overarching goal places Volkswagen at the forefront of automotive sustainability, showcasing its dedication not only to operational efficiency but also to reducing its environmental footprint. Kgoedi’s efforts play a crucial role in realizing this vision, as her work directly contributes to the company’s commitment to a greener future.

In her words, “Being recognised as the Energy Professional of the Year runner-up is an incredible honour that reflects not only my dedication to the energy sector over the past decade but also the collaborative efforts of those around me.” This statement encapsulates her philosophy of teamwork and community involvement in driving significant change.

Kgoedi is particularly inspired to extend her influence beyond the automotive industry and into the community. She views her recognition as a platform to inspire others and promote energy efficiency and sustainability in broader societal contexts. The acknowledgment of her contributions not only highlights her personal dedication but also exemplifies the importance of collective efforts in combating climate change.

Looking Forward
While Mark Vorster from SEM Solutions took home the title of Energy Professional of the Year, Kgoedi’s journey is just beginning. Her vision to push the boundaries of energy management is clear, as she aims to contribute meaningfully to sustainability efforts both within Volkswagen and the wider community. As she continues to lead initiatives that prioritize energy efficiency, her work serves as a beacon of hope in the ongoing fight against climate change.

Reabetsoe Kgoedi’s recognition is a powerful reminder of the impact that dedicated individuals can have on their organizations and communities.
