Kariega – Just over a year since earning the title of the official “Home of Polo,” Volkswagen Group Africa’s (VWGA) Kariega plant has hit a significant production milestone: 500 000 units of the latest Polo facelift have rolled off its assembly line.

The milestone vehicle, a striking Kings Red Polo destined for Germany, exemplifies the global demand for this compact icon. Since its facelift launch in August 2021, the Kariega plant has produced the Polo at a steady pace, balancing robust domestic sales with a growing footprint in international markets.

Volkswagen has been building Polos in Kariega since 1996, and over the past 29 years, the plant has produced a remarkable 1 992 464 units. Since July 2024, the facility has also served as the sole exporter of the Polo to Europe and Asia-Pacific, shipping vehicles to over 30 countries. Of the 500 000 facelift Polos produced, 452 207 were earmarked for export, while 47 793 remained in South Africa, reinforcing the vehicle’s dual role in driving both local sales and international recognition.

Volkswagens plant kariega reaches 500 000 polos since facelift launch

The Polo’s success is reflected not only in production figures but also in accolades. In 2024, it was South Africa’s most exported car and recently earned recognition at the Naamsa Accelerator Awards as Vehicle of the Year: Top Local Manufacturer and Top Exported Vehicle of the Year.

“The role of the Polo in the Volkswagen Group Africa success story has been a strong one, and the same can be said of its contribution to this country’s automotive exports,” said Ulrich Schwabe, Production Director at VWGA. “I am proud to share in this milestone with the colleagues who build, sell and export this high-quality car to the world.”

As Volkswagen continues to consolidate its global Polo production in Kariega, this milestone underscores not only the plant’s efficiency and engineering excellence but also South Africa’s growing prominence in the international automotive industry. For the Polo, a car that has been a mainstay of VWGA for nearly three decades, the future looks as bold and enduring as ever.
