Volkswagen is charting a new course in automotive innovation through a groundbreaking partnership with the German start-up Revoltech GmbH. This collaboration aims to develop a pioneering, sustainable surface material that could redefine automotive interiors by 2028.
A Vision for Sustainability
At the heart of this venture is the creation of LOVR™—a 100% bio-based leather alternative derived from industrial hemp. This material, developed from residues of the hemp industry, promises to be an eco-friendly substitute for traditional imitation leather. By harnessing regional hemp resources, LOVR™ not only supports sustainability but also integrates seamlessly into existing industrial production processes. Its potential for scalability and end-of-life recyclability makes it an appealing choice for large-scale automotive applications.
Volkswagen’s commitment to innovation is underscored by this collaboration. Kai Grünitz, Board Member for Technical Development, highlights the brand’s openness to integrating novel ideas across various industries. “At Technical Development, we place a strong focus on innovative, creative, and sustainable solutions for holistic, resource-saving vehicle development,” Grünitz states.

The Intersection of Start-Up Agility and Corporate Expertise
Andreas Walingen, Head of Strategy at Volkswagen, emphasizes the strategic significance of the partnership. “The sustainable use of resources is a key pillar in our ACCELERATE strategy and is firmly anchored in our mindset and actions,” Walingen notes. He believes that the collaboration between Revoltech and Volkswagen exemplifies how start-ups and established companies can synergize their strengths to expedite the introduction of new features into the automotive sector.
Revoltech GmbH, led by CEO and co-founder Lucas Fuhrmann, is at the forefront of this material innovation. Fuhrmann describes LOVR™ as “scalable and groundbreaking for sustainability in the automotive sector.” This novel surface material combines hemp fibers with a fully bio-based adhesive, employing a unique technology to deliver a truly circular solution.
Towards a Greener Future
Volkswagen’s Materials Technology, Design, and Components Development departments, along with Revoltech, are working collaboratively to integrate this material into future vehicle projects. The goal is to see LOVR™ in production vehicles starting in 2028. Early feedback from customer surveys has been overwhelmingly positive, indicating strong market potential for this sustainable innovation.
With a global footprint and a commitment to sustainable mobility, Volkswagen continues to lead by example. In 2023, the company delivered approximately 4.9 million vehicles, including popular models like the Polo, Golf, and ID. family of all-electric vehicles. Through its ACCELERATE strategy, Volkswagen is dedicated to evolving into the most desirable brand for sustainable transportation solutions.
