Strong performance in month of February with rise of 17.7 per cent to 399,700 vehicles*

Wolfsburg / Geneva, March 8, 2012 – The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand made significant gains in the month of February, with deliveries increasing by 17.7 per cent to 399,700* (February 2011: 339,500) units. Based on the cumulative figures for the first two months of this year, the brand therefore achieved record deliveries of 818,800 (January-February 2011: 758,100; +8.0 per cent)* vehicles.

“Despite difficult conditions on some markets around the world, the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand continued its excellent development in the first two months of this year. We were able to maintain our brisk pace thanks to our strong, young product range,” Christian Klingler, Board Member for Sales and Marketing for the Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand, commented on Tuesday on the occasion of the Geneva Motor Show.

Volkswagen Passenger Cars reported gains outside Europe in particular. In the Asia / Pacific region, the brand grew deliveries by 10.6 per cent in the period to February, handing over 333,200 (301,200) vehicles to customers. During this period, 300,300 (274,300; +9.5 per cent) units were delivered on the single market of China (incl. Hong Kong). Vehicle sales on the American continent during the first two months of the year were also very encouraging. Volkswagen Passenger Cars grew deliveries in the North America region by 29.2 per cent to 83,500 (64,600) vehicles, of which 57,800 (39,900; +45.0 per cent) units were handed over to customers in the United States. Vehicle sales in the South America region remained stable: 121,100 (121,000; +0.1 per cent) units were delivered there in January and February.

The present situation in the markets in Southern Europe impacted deliveries in Western Europe (excluding Germany). The overall market contracted by some 12 per cent. Volkswagen could not entirely escape the effects of this trend and delivered 131,000 (137,400; -4.7 per cent) vehicles. 85,000 (86,000; -1.1 per cent) vehicles were delivered to customers in the home market of Germany. In contrast, the brand reported a substantial 63.6 per cent increase in deliveries in the Central and Eastern Europe region to 35,800 (21,900) units. Deliveries in Russia continued at a high level with 20,700 (9,700; +112.5 per cent) vehicles handed over to customers there.
