Johannesburg, 10 March 2025 – The opening round of the National Extreme Festival powered by Coca-Cola delivered a breathtaking spectacle as the Volkswagen Rookie Cup set Killarney International Raceway alight with exhilarating racing action. Young drivers, many of whom were making their circuit racing debuts, displayed maturity and skill beyond their years, leaving the Cape Town crowd in awe.
Volkswagen Head of Motorsport Mike Rowe was left thoroughly impressed by the young racers’ performances. “Our 2025 Volkswagen Cup Rookies have certainly raised the bar,” he remarked. “The second heat today, in particular, showcased an incredible level of talent and determination. If this is how the season begins, we can only imagine the excitement that lies ahead.”
Khan Seizes Opening Race Victory
The weekend commenced with Friday practice, where most of the rookies familiarized themselves with their cars, the Killarney circuit, and the intensity of a main circuit race weekend. When qualifying wrapped up, second-year Rookie Cup racer Uzair Khan emerged on pole position, proving his experience was invaluable. However, it was the impressive pace of newcomers Giovanni Fiorotto, Mauro da Luz, Christopher Tait, Luke Hill, and young female driver Berlin Robinson that truly signaled the rising competitiveness of the series.
Khan capitalized on his front-row start, executing a flawless drive to take victory in the opening race. Oval track graduate Fiorotto kept him in check throughout, finishing a close second, while VW Challenge Class C champion Christopher Tait claimed the final podium spot. Josh Moore showcased his resilience, recovering well to secure fourth ahead of a tightly packed group comprising Hill, Robinson, and da Luz, with Luke Corbett rounding out the top eight.

Da Luz Steals the Spotlight in Second Race Thriller
If the first race was a masterclass in precision driving, the second was a heart-stopping thriller. The leading five drivers were inseparable throughout the contest, exchanging positions and pushing their Volkswagen Polo race cars to the absolute limit. In the end, it was Mauro da Luz who exhibited remarkable racecraft, seizing the lead with just over a lap remaining and holding off a determined Fiorotto and Khan to claim his maiden victory.
Luke Hill managed to fend off Christopher Tait for fourth in a gripping battle, with the top five covered by less than two seconds at the finish line. Behind them, Moore, Corbett, and Robinson engaged in their own intense scrap, further underlining the depth of talent in this year’s Rookie Cup field. Post-race adjudications saw Khan relegated to fifth behind Hill and Tait following an on-track incident.
Fiorotto Takes the Round Honours
After two electrifying races, Giovanni Fiorotto emerged as the overall winner of the event, showcasing consistency and racecraft that belied his rookie status. Uzair Khan’s impressive weekend secured him second place, while Christopher Tait’s solid performances earned him third. Luke Hill, Josh Moore, Mauro da Luz, Berlin Robinson, and Luke Corbett completed the overall classification.
With round one in the books, the Volkswagen Rookie Cup now shifts focus to the Aldo Scribante Extreme Festival, scheduled for Saturday, 10 May. Expectations are high, and if Killarney was any indication, fans are in for another weekend of breathtaking racing.
