In the world of camper conversions, the first brushstroke matters. With the launch of its new Multivan Camper base vehicle, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is handing professional converters a factory-fresh canvas, already stretched and primed, ready for imagination to take over.
Revealed in Milton Keynes on 16 February 2026, the new Multivan Camper is purpose-built as a starting point rather than a finished masterpiece. It strips away the unnecessary and keeps only what matters: a genuine Volkswagen foundation, the brand’s iconic pop-up roof, swivel front seats, and a fully trimmed yet empty rear cabin waiting for transformation.
Built on the long wheelbase Multivan platform, the Multivan Camper is designed to give converters a head start. The manual pop-up roof is pre-installed at the factory, with headlining already fitted, eliminating time-consuming structural modifications. Behind the two swivel front seats lies a cavernous 4,053 litres of space. With interior dimensions of 2,625mm in length, 1,665mm in width and 1,312mm in height, it offers ample room for everything from compact weekend layouts to fully equipped long-haul adventure builds.
Crucially, the rear shell arrives without floor coverings or rear seats. By removing components that would otherwise be discarded, Volkswagen has created a cleaner, more efficient base that minimises waste and maximises flexibility. Twin sliding doors and a tailgate further enhance accessibility, giving converters multiple layout possibilities.
Powertrain options ensure that the finished camper can match its owner’s travel ambitions. The line-up begins with the 150PS TDI paired to a DSG gearbox, priced from £43,900 excluding VAT (£52,680 including VAT). For those seeking electrified capability and all-wheel-drive confidence, the 240PS eHybrid DSG 4Motion variant starts at £50,725 excluding VAT (£60,870 including VAT). The eHybrid option blends efficiency with performance, offering converters and end customers an alternative for low-emission zones and longer journeys alike.
Factory options allow converters to tailor the base vehicle even further before the build begins. Features such as Climatronic three-zone air conditioning, heated front seats, satellite navigation and alloy wheel upgrades mean the starting specification can be aligned more closely with the intended final product.
The Multivan Camper is supplied with incomplete M1 homologation, requiring professional conversion and second-stage type approval before registration. This ensures that while the base vehicle is factory-engineered, the final creation remains the work of skilled specialists who can bring unique visions to life within regulatory frameworks.
Whether destined for beach weekends, family escapes or cross-continental road trips, the new Multivan Camper positions Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as an enabler of craftsmanship. It is not a finished campervan. It is something more interesting: the beginning of one.
