Kariega, 5 February 2025 – In a bold move that signals a new era for premium motorcycles in South Africa, Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) has officially taken the helm of Ducati’s local retail operations. Effective from 1 January 2025, the renowned Italian brand will now be managed under VWGA’s robust framework—complementing an already impressive portfolio that includes Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Audi, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.

A Strategic Expansion into the Premium Motorcycle Segment

Ducati, celebrated for its cutting-edge engineering and heritage steeped in racing success, now stands as the fourth jewel in VWGA’s crown. The move not only strengthens the company’s market position but also diversifies its offerings to cater to an ever-evolving consumer base in South Africa. With a well-established network and proven expertise in automotive retail, VWGA is poised to elevate the Ducati brand to new heights.

Comprehensive Responsibilities for Superior Service

VWGA’s expanded role encompasses the full spectrum of retail operations and import logistics for Ducati motorcycles—including parts and accessories. This integration aims to streamline processes, enhance customer experiences, and ensure that Ducati enthusiasts receive the exceptional service synonymous with the brand’s legacy.

Simphiwe Nghona, Head of Sales and Marketing at VWGA, commented on the development:

“Ducati is a premium international motorcycle brand with a strong and proud heritage. Over the years, it has built a loyal and passionate client base in South Africa which our company is excited and looking forward to servicing from now on. We are confident that the current and future Ducati clients will positively benefit from our established sales and after sales processes, as well as our dealer network.”

Three Strategic Dealer Sites to Drive Growth

To maximize accessibility and cater to the diverse South African market, VWGA is integrating the Ducati brand across three key regions:

  • Gauteng: The current approved retailer in Gauteng remains in place, ensuring continuity for existing Ducati clients.
  • Western Cape: A new dealership in Cape Town, already recognized as a reputable Audi dealer, has been appointed to handle operations in the region.
  • KwaZulu Natal: Plans are underway to appoint a dedicated retailer in Durban, further cementing VWGA’s commitment to nationwide service excellence.

This strategic distribution network is designed to meet the needs of Ducati enthusiasts, whether they are navigating urban streets, winding mountain roads, or challenging gravel tracks.

Ambitious Growth Targets and Future Models

VWGA has set an ambitious growth target for Ducati in its initial two years under the new management structure. With a goal of capturing a double-digit market share by the end of 2026, the company is gearing up for a dynamic phase of expansion. This momentum will be bolstered by a slate of exciting new models scheduled for launch over the next two years, aimed at reinvigorating the brand’s presence and appeal.

Tertius Cronje has been appointed to head the Ducati brand in South Africa. With 24 years of experience in automotive retail—including a decade in motorcycle sales—Cronje’s leadership is expected to be a driving force behind the brand’s projected success.

Francesco Milicia, Director of Global Sales & After Sales at Ducati Motor Holding Spa, encapsulated the sentiment:

“South Africa is the ideal environment for our motorcycles range, either for track use, twisty roads or gravel. I am sure that this, together with the passion and professionalism of our new partner, Volkswagen Group Africa, will allow us to provide great experiences to our Ducatisti, allowing us to expand our presence in the country and getting closer to their needs, also considering that in the country there are some of the greatest collectors in the world of special cars and bikes.”

A New Chapter in South African Motorcycle Excellence

With VWGA’s seasoned expertise and Ducati’s unparalleled heritage, the collaboration promises not only to meet but exceed the expectations of South Africa’s discerning motorcycle enthusiasts. As the Ducati brand accelerates into a promising future under the VWGA umbrella, the road ahead is filled with exciting opportunities for both seasoned riders and newcomers alike.

Stay tuned as VWGA and Ducati drive forward, setting new benchmarks in the premium motorcycle market across South Africa.
