Kariega – On Saturday, 30 November, Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) threw open the doors of its Kariega plant, welcoming an impressive 15,410 employees and their loved ones for its third Family Day. The event, held under the banner of gratitude and celebration, offered a vibrant day of activities and entertainment while highlighting the vital role of its workforce in the company’s ongoing success.
Martina Biene, Chairperson and Managing Director of VWGA, encapsulated the spirit of the event in her remarks:
“At VWGA, we appreciate the hard work and dedication of every employee. The Family Day was our way of expressing gratitude not only for their commitment but also for the support of their families, who contribute to our collective success. It’s a day to celebrate our shared achievements and strengthen the bonds that help us thrive together.”
This year’s Family Day marked the third such celebration at the Kariega plant, following similar events in 2014 and 2018. The initiative underscores VWGA’s commitment to fostering a strong sense of community within its workforce. A similar event was hosted for Gauteng-based employees in October, ensuring that all staff had the opportunity to connect and celebrate.
Bringing Work and Home Together
For many attendees, the event was a chance to step inside the workspaces of their loved ones, gaining insight into the environments where they spend a significant part of their days. Employees proudly showcased their workplace, with department displays offering a behind-the-scenes look at the state-of-the-art plant.
The day wasn’t just about showcasing technology and production capabilities; it was about creating moments of joy and connection. A host of family-friendly activities ensured that there was something for everyone. Younger guests delighted in the dedicated kids’ zone, which featured face painting, jumping castles, and interactive games.

Entertainment and Thrills Galore
The celebration was infused with local flavour, featuring performances by popular acts such as Just Labs, Amazing Dancers, Olutheran, and Steph the Hypnotist. As the day progressed, the energy surged with dynamic performances by headliners DJ Super Man and Sdudla noma1000, who kept spirits high and the dance floor buzzing.
Adding an adrenaline rush to the festivities was the Gymkhana area, where professional driving instructors and Volkswagen motorsport driver Jonathan Mogotsi demonstrated the capabilities of the locally-manufactured Polo Vivo GT. Guests were captivated by the thrilling high-speed maneuvers, which offered a rare glimpse into the excitement of motorsport.
A Celebration of Unity and Excellence
VWGA’s Family Day was more than just a day of fun—it was a heartfelt acknowledgment of the dedication and excellence of its employees. By inviting their families into the fold, VWGA reinforced the interconnectedness of work, community, and home.
The event showcased not only VWGA’s appreciation for its workforce but also its commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment. As VWGA continues to drive innovation and growth, it does so with a clear understanding of the importance of the people behind its success.
The Family Day at Kariega wasn’t just a celebration of achievements—it was a powerful reminder of the strength found in unity, and the boundless potential of a community working together toward a shared vision.
