Wolfsburg/Hanover, May 21, 2025 — Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWN) is set to enter a new era of leadership and strategic vision with the appointment of Stefan Mecha as Chairman of the Brand Board of Management, effective July 1, 2025. Mecha will succeed Prof. Dr. Carsten Intra, who is stepping down from his role for personal reasons under a retirement programme.
The leadership change marks a pivotal moment for VWN, a brand that has played a key role in Volkswagen’s transformation and electrification strategy under Intra’s tenure. As Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the Volkswagen Brand, Head of the Brand Group Core, and Chairman of the VWN Advisory Board, explains:
“Together with the team, Stefan Mecha will take the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand to the next level and further strengthen cooperation within the Brand Group Core.”
A Legacy of Innovation and Strategic Foresight
Prof. Dr. Carsten Intra’s leadership since September 2020 has been defined by bold initiatives and a clear future-oriented roadmap. Under his guidance, VWN launched several cornerstone models, including the iconic ID. Buzz, the next-generation Transporter, and expanded the lifestyle-oriented California sub-brand. Notably, Intra also oversaw the foundational development of VWN’s Autonomous Driving division—paving the way for future mobility innovations.
His efforts bore measurable success: by 2023, VWN had achieved record earnings, solidifying its position as a vital player within the Group. Reflecting on Intra’s contributions, Schäfer noted:
“Carsten set the right course to further unlock the potential of light commercial vehicles. I would like to thank him for the excellent collaboration and wish him all the best for the future.”

Stefan Mecha: Global Perspective, Grounded Leadership
Stefan Mecha brings over 15 years of Volkswagen Group experience—and a career deeply rooted in global automotive leadership. His most recent role as Executive CEO of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand in China saw him successfully navigate one of the world’s most competitive and rapidly evolving markets.
With previous roles spanning Brazil, South Africa, Russia, and the Middle East, Mecha has consistently demonstrated the ability to drive performance in complex environments. Notably, his first position within the Group was in sales at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles—a full-circle moment that underscores his deep understanding of the brand.
“Stefan has shown that with team spirit, pragmatism, and deep market knowledge, it’s possible to succeed even in the most demanding markets,” said Schäfer. “I am confident he will lead VWN to new heights.”
A Future Defined by Collaboration and Innovation
As part of the Brand Group Core, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles plays a crucial role in shaping the Group’s overarching strategy—from electrification and connectivity to autonomy and customer-centric services. With Mecha at the helm, the brand is expected to build upon its legacy of delivering versatile, future-ready mobility solutions for both business and lifestyle customers.
The transition signals not only a change in leadership but also a recommitment to global thinking, operational excellence, and close inter-brand cooperation. As VWN looks to the next chapter, Stefan Mecha’s appointment marks the beginning of a new drive—one that blends legacy with innovation, and continuity with ambition.
