Volkswagen continues to dominate the UK new-car market, cementing its position as the best-selling brand for the fourth year in a row. As confirmed by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Volkswagen registered 166,304 new cars in the UK in 2024, a 2.6% increase from the previous year. This impressive achievement gives the brand a commanding market share of 8.52%, maintaining the same level of success seen in 2023 and widening its lead by over 41,000 units over the second-place competitor.
The Golf, a hallmark of Volkswagen’s success, remains at the heart of the brand’s appeal. With 32,370 registrations, it secured the sixth spot among the UK’s best-selling cars in 2024, marking a milestone in its 50th anniversary year. Not far behind, the Polo also made its mark, finishing in the top 10 as it embarks on its own 50th-anniversary celebrations.
Volkswagen’s continued success is not merely a product of its well-established models; 2024 saw several new and refreshed offerings that further bolstered its sales. Among these were the all-new ID.7 and ID.7 Tourer, the updated Passat and Tiguan, as well as the refreshed T-Cross and Golf models. The introduction of the Black Editions and updated trims, including the popular Match variants, added to the appeal, providing both style and value to customers.

Looking ahead, Volkswagen plans to expand its range even further in 2025 with the launch of the five- and seven-seat Tayron and the new T-Roc. Fans of the brand will also be excited to see the arrival of the eagerly awaited ID. 2all and ID. 2X electric cars, which will further enhance Volkswagen’s presence in the growing electric vehicle market.
Rod McLeod, Director of Volkswagen UK, expressed his satisfaction with the brand’s continued dominance: “I am delighted that Volkswagen is once again the top-selling new-car brand in the UK – and with a healthy gap between us and the next closest brand in the market. The results announced today underline the quality and popularity of our range, and of course, our fantastic network of Volkswagen Retailers, who continue to deliver outstanding customer service.”
Reflecting on the past year, McLeod added, “The past 12 months have had many highlights, including Golf’s 50th anniversary, the re-introduction of Match trims, and glowing reviews and awards for new models including the ID.7, Passat, and Tiguan.”
Volkswagen’s success in 2024 speaks to its unmatched reputation for quality, reliability, and innovation. With a strong range of both traditional and electric vehicles, coupled with an unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction, it’s clear that the brand’s dominance in the UK market is set to continue for years to come.
