Scott Speed claimed his second victory in a row while Tanner Foust battled to third place with a last-lap pass, earning the team its fourth double podium finish of the Red Bull Global Rallycross season.
Herndon, VA — Scott Speed completed a perfect weekend Saturday afternoon, taking his Volkswagen Beetle GRC to victory after setting the quickest time in qualifying and winning each of his Heat and Semifinal races. The reigning Red Bull Global Rallycross champion walks away from D.C. with a maximum haul of points, placing him second—just behind Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross teammates, Tanner Foust—in the provisional points standings.
Speed enjoyed a nearly trouble-free weekend, encountering few issues on the way to his dominating win. The driver of the No. 41 Special Operations Warrior Foundation Beetle GRC led from the start of the Final, crossing the line nearly two seconds clear of his nearest competitor.
“It seems like we’re back on track with two wins in a row—I’m so happy to show the full capabilities of our car and team,” said Speed after the race. “It was something special for me at this race in the Nation’s Capital to have Special Operations Warrior Foundation on the car. I’m so proud to be representing them and back-to-back wins with them has been amazing.”
Foust’s run to the podium was more difficult than his teammate’s. The No. 34 Rockstar Energy Drink Beetle GRC started in the middle of the front row of the grid after winning each of his Heat and Semifinal races. On the opening corners, Foust lost position to other competitors and completed the first lap in fourth position. After the initial shuffle, Foust hounded the third-place driver each and every lap, and even spun his car midway through the race. The two-time champion recovered quickly and forced his rival into a mistake on the last lap for a third-place finish.
“Honestly, third place feels like a win today,” said Foust on the podium. “This is a scary track when you’re running by yourself, but right behind another car, blinded with mud, is a whole different story. I have to thank the team who built this car in less than a week to get us on track. Congratulations to Scott on the win, making the championship really tight between the two Beetles.”
The win in D.C. marks the team’s fifth victory in seven contests this season. Volkswagen leads the manufacturer points standings and Speed and Foust sit one-two in the driver’s championship. Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross will be back in action next month at the inaugural race in Atlantic City on August 28th.
