Milton Keynes, UK, September 17, 2024 – The Volkswagen Amarok took centre stage at this year’s ‘Britain’s Fittest Farmer’ competition, helping spotlight the physical and mental wellbeing of the UK’s farming community. The event, sponsored by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, saw farmers from across the country put their endurance, strength, and agility to the test in a series of demanding challenges.
Crowning four winners in separate categories, the finale concluded with Emily Ashford being named Fittest Farmer in the female under-40s category, while William Arden took the title in the male under-40s. In the over-40s, Anne Grindal and Michael Georgiou proved to be the top athletes in their respective female and male categories.
Hosted in Essex, the final competition involved an intense physical assault course designed to push participants to their limits. Under the watchful eye of Tom Kemp from Farm Fitness, competitors navigated the rigorous course, which was tailored to test their speed, power, and stamina.
The annual competition, organised by Farmers Weekly since its inception in 2018, is about more than just physical fitness. It highlights the importance of mental health and overall wellbeing within the agricultural community, where long hours and demanding work can take a toll. The initiative provides a platform for the farming community to gather and discuss these important issues while celebrating their shared achievements.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, now in its second year as a key sponsor of the competition, continues to demonstrate its commitment to supporting farmers through not only practical products but also by actively engaging in events that promote the health and wellbeing of this essential workforce. “It is vital to ensure everyone has good mental and physical wellbeing, for all workplaces, but especially in demanding jobs such as farming,” said Laura Bignall, Brand and Performance Manager at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. “We’re proud to sponsor such an important, and fun, event, which aligns with our continued effort to promote mental and physical wellbeing across all sectors of trade.”
Andrew Meredith, Editor of Farmers Weekly, praised the 2024 champions, saying, “Congratulations to our 2024 winners, Emily, William, Anne, and Michael. The annual Britain’s Fittest Farmer Competition brings together people from all over the country and shines a light on physical and mental wellbeing in the farming community. We’re thankful to our sponsors, including Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, that consistently contribute to and amplify the conversations surrounding this incredibly important issue.”
Attendees of the competition also had the opportunity to explore the Volkswagen Amarok, which was on display during the event, offering not just its rugged appeal but also a health-focused experience. The Amarok was accompanied by a tent offering massages and healthy snacks for participants, reinforcing the connection between physical activity, wellness, and the farming profession.
The Volkswagen Amarok, known for its durability and versatility, is engineered to handle both work and recreation, whether on the farm or off-road. With advanced safety features and a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes, it remains a staple vehicle for those in demanding industries such as farming.
