Fleet of Scorpio-Ns to Conquer Namibia’s Challenging Roads

Cape Town, 27 February 2024: In celebration of its 2024 SA Car of the Year Awards, Mahindra is setting off on an extraordinary two-week expedition across some of Africa’s most rugged terrains.

Departing from Cape Town, Mahindra’s convoy will traverse South Africa and Namibia, tackling a variety of landscapes, including the treacherous Namib Desert. This journey underscores the vehicle’s robustness and versatility.

“In recognizing the Mahindra Scorpio-N as the Adventure SUV of the Year, the SA Guild of Mobility Journalists assessed both its on-road manners and off-road capabilities. We aim to replicate these tests and push them further, demonstrating that the Scorpio-N’s build quality and engineering excellence make it the ideal adventure companion, straight from the showroom,” says Rajesh Gupta, CEO of Mahindra South Africa.

The flagship Scorpio-N is built on a new-generation ladder frame platform, featuring a Pentalink multi-link rear suspension, and powered by the latest mHawk turbodiesel engine delivering 128.6 kW and 400 Nm of torque, paired with a new 6-speed automatic transmission. From the tires to the roof, the Scorpio-N is entirely redesigned.

The Scorpio-N also debuts Mahindra’s new terrain-response system, 4XPLOR, allowing drivers to adjust vehicle settings and performance to suit various terrains and driving conditions.

Notably, the Scorpio-N has set a new standard in the market for ladder-frame off-road vehicles by achieving a five-star safety rating in the Global New Car Assessment Programme.

To test this technology, a team from Specialised Adventures and Mahindra will drive standard production models through the Skeleton Coast, Damaraland, and Kaokoland before returning to Pretoria, Gauteng.

The adventure begins in the otherworldly landscape of the Skeleton Coast, where explorers will navigate the Langstrand dunes and seek out the Zelia shipwreck. The journey continues to Damaraland to explore the ancient Welwitschia Mirabilis plants and ascend Namibia’s highest mountain from the Ugab River foothills, before exploring the Spitzkoppe.

In Kaokoland, the team will engage with the Himba tribe, uncover the secrets of the Lone Men of the Kaokoland, and traverse the Hoarusib and Hoanib riverbeds in hopes of encountering Namib Desert elephants.

The first episode of this thrilling expedition will be posted on Mahindra’s social media channels on 21 June 2024.

This marks the conclusion of the current series of Mahindra Adventures, following the promise to visit seven exceptional locations from the launch of the Special Edition Karoo Pik Up range and the Scorpio-N.

The initial adventure featured a Pik Up Karoo Dusk, Karoo Dawn, and Karoo Storm journeying from Namibia’s Richtersveld to Lesotho and the Western Cape Winelands, all captured on film.

In the second adventure, participants embraced Active Living by engaging in outdoor activities in the Western Cape, driving the XUV700.

In each adventure, Mahindra demonstrated that you could explore every corner of our beautiful country behind the wheel of a Mahindra, inviting viewers to join the journey.

“Mahindra has been honored as South Africa’s Adventure SUV of the Year and the Motor Enthusiast’s Choice. With our final adventure, we will show our fans and owners that Mahindra is the ultimate Adventure partner,” says Rajesh.
