Back in 2018, CUPRA emerged as a bold new brand, built on the pillars of emotion, sportiness, and design. Now, six years later, the story comes full circle with the unveiling of the CUPRA Terramar, an SUV that embodies the brand’s daring spirit and heritage. Named after the iconic Terramar Circuit in Sitges, the Terramar SUV marks a new chapter in CUPRA’s journey, combining athleticism, Mediterranean-inspired design, and innovative engineering to redefine what an SUV can be.
According to Jorge Diez, CUPRA’s Design Director, the Terramar was conceived to evoke deep emotions and push the boundaries of what an SUV can offer. “For some people, design follows function, but for us, it follows emotions,” Diez explains. The model’s development was influenced by the rich architecture of Barcelona and the elemental forces of the Mediterranean. The vehicle’s name, derived from ‘terra’ (land) and ‘mar’ (sea), symbolizes the connection between the earth and the sea, and the powerful yet balanced design cues that evoke this interplay.
Sporty Proportions and Dynamic Design
At first glance, the CUPRA Terramar stands out with its imposing presence and sporty proportions. Measuring 4.5 metres in length, it captures the essence of a high-performance SUV while maintaining the design language characteristic of the CUPRA brand. The front fascia is dominated by a long, high bonnet that tapers into a V-shaped grille, which conveys a sense of power and movement. The rear of the vehicle features strong, muscular shoulders, further enhancing its bold, athletic stance.
Achieving this balance between height, dimensions, and sportiness was no easy feat. “We thrive on challenges,” Diez notes. “There’s no such thing as second place for us, nor for our design.” The Terramar blends SUV functionality with a sense of dynamism typically found in smaller, sportier vehicles. The result is a vehicle that is both confident and aggressive, without sacrificing the sleek lines and surfaces that evoke sensuality and emotion.

The Power of Lines and Surfaces
A hallmark of the Terramar’s design is its interplay between sharp lines and flowing surfaces. The “Rocker Wave,” a sensuous ascending line running along the lower side section of the car, lifts the body visually, giving the Terramar a unique and energetic presence. The prominent “shark nose” at the front and sharp contours at the rear evoke a sense of tension and readiness, as if the vehicle is poised to leap into action.
“The lines of the CUPRA Terramar speak for themselves,” says Diez. “They convey determination and focus, while the surfaces reflect our emotional spirit and human inspiration.” This balance between bold, aggressive elements and soft, flowing surfaces sets the Terramar apart, making it not just an SUV, but a statement of performance, design, and passion.
The Future of CUPRA’s Design Philosophy
The introduction of the CUPRA Terramar is more than just a new vehicle; it represents a new design language for the brand. As CUPRA expands into one of Europe’s fastest-growing segments, the Terramar is set to become an icon of the brand’s future. By adopting a design ethos that pushes emotions to the forefront, the Terramar promises to deliver not just performance and capability, but a deeply engaging driving experience.
CUPRA’s bold approach to the SUV market is embodied in the Terramar’s determined appearance, sporty proportions, and Mediterranean-influenced design. As it enters the competitive world of premium SUVs, the CUPRA Terramar will undoubtedly push the limits of what drivers expect from a vehicle, all while staying true to the brand’s core DNA of emotion and performance.
