The annual Enactus National Exposition, held in Sandton in July 2024, once again showcased the remarkable creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of South Africa’s brightest student minds. This premier event brought together over 700 youth, academic staff, business executives, and alumni to celebrate and evaluate the innovative projects presented by university teams. This year, the University of the Western Cape (UWC) emerged victorious, clinching the National Championship with their groundbreaking digital solutions.

A Platform for Innovation
The Enactus National Exposition is a vital platform for fostering learning, engagement, and collaboration among student entrepreneurs. It underscores how student-led projects and enterprises can drive progress through entrepreneurial action. The 2024 event was no exception, highlighting how these young innovators are poised to address pressing community needs and enhance social mobility.

Ford South Africa’s Continued Support
Ford South Africa will sponsor the UWC Enactus team to represent the country at the Enactus World Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan, in October 2024. This sponsorship is part of Ford’s ongoing commitment to nurturing innovation and empowering student entrepreneurs. The Enactus World Cup will see 33 national champions from around the globe compete for the ultimate accolade, providing an international stage for showcasing their creativity and commitment to sustainable development.

The Winning Projects
Webmax: Bridging the Digital Skills Gap

The UWC team’s Webmax initiative aims to bridge the digital skills gap among young individuals while empowering small and medium enterprises (SMEs). By equipping youth with digital skills, Webmax not only provides employment opportunities but also supports SMEs in enhancing their digital presence. This dual-focus approach ensures that both the workforce and the business sector benefit from the initiative.

LenoKids: Revolutionizing EdTech

The second winning project, LenoKids, is an EdTech startup focused on improving literacy levels among children aged five to thirteen. Utilizing a gamified WhatsApp chatbot, LenoKids offers personalized learning experiences tailored to each child’s level of understanding. This innovative approach makes education engaging and accessible, significantly boosting literacy rates among young learners.

This initiative addresses food waste and promotes sustainability. The team will receive a grant of $5,000 from Ford Philanthropy to further develop their business.

University of Mpumalanga: Charcool Climate

The second prize went to the University of Mpumalanga for their project, Charcool Climate. This innovative solution assists informal traders and street vendors in keeping their perishable goods cool using “Zero Cooling Chambers.” The team will receive a $3,000 grant to expand their operations.

The team will receive a $1,000 grant to advance their initiative.

Ford Philanthropy’s Vision
Ford Philanthropy, formerly the Ford Motor Company Fund, continues to support student-led initiatives through the Ford C3 challenge, promoting social mobility and innovation. This year’s winners exemplify the program’s impact, demonstrating how innovative thinking can create practical solutions that make a real difference in communities.

“We are thrilled to sponsor these students to attend the World Cup in Kazakhstan,” said Neale Hill, President of Ford Motor Company, Africa. “Their projects show immense potential to positively impact the lives of many South Africans. By nurturing their ideas, we empower the next generation of business leaders and innovators.”

The 2024 Enactus National Exposition highlighted the incredible talent and innovative spirit of South African students. With the support of Ford South Africa and Ford Philanthropy, these young entrepreneurs are set to make a global impact at the Enactus World Cup.
