Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Study Reveals Health and Wellness Goals Among UK Van Drivers

Milton Keynes, UK, 28 January 2025 – The road to health and wellness is becoming a key priority for UK van drivers in 2025. According to a new study by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, an impressive 86% of UK van drivers have resolved to make positive lifestyle changes this year, focusing on healthier diets, increased exercise, and better mental health practices.

Healthier Eating Habits Take the Lead
For many van drivers, the fast pace of their profession often limits access to nutritious meals. In 2024, lunch for UK van drivers typically included homemade sandwiches, snacks, and wraps (56%), followed by fast food (42%) and shop-bought meal deals (39%). However, 65% of respondents are setting their sights on healthier eating in 2025, aiming to replace quick convenience foods with more nutritious options.

Craig Cavanagh, National Fleet Manager and Mental Health First Aider at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, emphasized:

“We’re all aware of the positive impact that a healthy diet can have on our mood and mental wellbeing. Making better food choices is a small step that can lead to significant improvements in overall health and happiness.”

Tackling the Exercise Gap
Over half (52%) of van drivers admitted to not achieving the recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week in 2024, citing long working hours and fatigue as common barriers. This year, 57% are pledging to integrate regular exercise into their routines, recognizing its role in combating stress and improving physical fitness.

Balancing the Load: Mental Health in Focus
Volkswagen’s study highlights a growing concern: 63% of van drivers felt overwhelmed by work each month in 2024, a sharp rise from 51% in 2023. One quarter (28%) pointed to poor work-life balance as a key contributor to their stress.

In response, 38% of van drivers plan to prioritize work-life balance in 2025 to safeguard their mental health. With 61% of respondents reporting an increase in working hours compared to 2023, this shift reflects a recognition of the importance of setting boundaries and creating time for personal wellbeing.

Cavanagh added:

“Prioritising health and fitness can be a real challenge, particularly when you’re on the go or working long hours. It’s encouraging to see so many van drivers making this a priority for the year ahead. These efforts are essential to help van drivers stay in good physical and mental shape.”

Driving Positive Change
As the backbone of the UK’s mobile workforce, van drivers play a vital role in numerous industries. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ study underscores the importance of supporting their wellbeing and creating a culture where health and fitness are accessible, even for those with demanding schedules.

By committing to healthier habits in 2025, UK van drivers are not only improving their individual wellbeing but also setting an example for others in the industry to follow. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles continues to advocate for initiatives that help drivers maintain a healthier, more balanced lifestyle, ensuring they can thrive both on and off the road.
