Volkswagen Group Africa’s Kariega plant has achieved international acclaim for its innovative plastic recycling project, earning top honors in the Zero Impact Factory category of the prestigious Challenge of the Brands competition.

The initiative, part of the plant’s broader 2Y24 Production and Logistics program, focuses on repurposing discarded plastic components like grommets and caps from engines and other automotive parts. Since its inception in 2023, the project has diverted an impressive 132 tons of plastic waste from landfills—equivalent to the weight of approximately 105 Polo GTIs.

Central to this endeavor is a partnership with Vistarus, a local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting impoverished and substance-dependent individuals. At Vistarus, collected plastic parts undergo transformation into pellets, which are then sold and upcycled into new products such as crates. The revenue generated from these activities not only sustains Vistarus’s operations but also creates employment opportunities within the community.

Turning Waste Into Wonder Kariega Plants Award Winning Recycling Initiative

Ulrich Schwabe, VWGA’s Production Director, expressed gratitude on behalf of the Plant Kariega team for receiving the award, emphasizing its significance in validating their efforts. He highlighted that beyond environmental benefits, the initiative underscores Volkswagen’s commitment to social responsibility and community engagement. The project aligns closely with VWGA’s broader environmental strategy aimed at achieving a Zero Impact Factory status across its production plants by 2030.

This recognition not only celebrates Kariega’s achievement in sustainable manufacturing but also serves as a catalyst for future initiatives aimed at further reducing landfill waste and fostering positive community impact.
