Toyota has officially pulled the wraps off the sixth-generation RAV4 in Japan, marking a global debut for the world’s most popular SUV. Reimagined under the theme “Life is an Adventure,” the all-new RAV4 embraces a spirit of exploration, marrying rugged off-road capability with intelligent design and cutting-edge electrification.
With significant improvements across performance, connectivity, and safety, the new RAV4 is built for modern adventurers who demand more from every journey — whether it’s the daily urban grind or a remote weekend escape.
Electrified Power for the Modern Explorer
At the heart of the new RAV4 lies Toyota’s most advanced hybrid technology yet. Buyers can choose between the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) and the Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), both of which benefit from significant upgrades.
The PHEV variant now features Toyota’s sixth-generation hybrid system, delivering a substantial leap in electric-only range — up to 150km, a 58% increase from the previous 95km. This is made possible by a newly developed high-output charger and an ultra-efficient battery system, enabling drivers to enjoy more silent, emission-free kilometres on every charge.
Performance has also been sharpened. Thanks to a 12% boost in motor output, the PHEV offers a more responsive and exhilarating driving experience, whether you’re navigating city traffic or venturing off the beaten path. What’s more, the PHEV comes equipped with vehicle-to-home (V2H) capability — allowing it to act as a mobile power source for outdoor excursions or emergency situations. And with DC fast charging, you can reach 80% capacity in just 30 minutes.
The HEV version hasn’t been left behind. It now features enhanced core components such as a newly optimised transaxle and power control unit. The result? Quicker acceleration, greater agility, and smoother handling — perfect for overtaking on the highway or darting through urban traffic.
Design: Bold, Practical, and Purpose-Built
Toyota has sculpted the new RAV4 with purpose, drawing inspiration from three core design philosophies:
- Big Foot: A celebration of large-diameter tyres and a commanding presence
- Life-up: An emphasis on off-road capability and rugged utility
- Utility: Practical, versatile space for everyday needs
The result is a design that’s not just bold — it’s deeply functional. Inside, the cabin has been thoroughly reworked. A lowered dashboard (by 40mm) improves visibility, while the clever new “island architecture” interior layout centralises key controls like the gear shifter, infotainment screen, and air vents — enhancing ergonomic comfort and minimising driver distraction.
Storage is smarter too. A reversible centre console doubles as an armrest and tray, while boot space has been expanded to 749 litres (up from 733 litres). Fold-flat rear seats offer even more room for bikes, camping gear, or weekend luggage.

Three Distinct Personalities
To suit different lifestyles, Toyota is offering the new RAV4 in three unique styles:
- CORE: The city-slicker’s dream — sleek, confident, and refined, with a hammerhead-inspired front fascia that exudes modern urban appeal.
- ADVENTURE: Built for the trailblazer, this rugged version features a wide stance, durable wheel arch cladding, and a grille that announces its off-road intentions with pride.
- GR SPORT: Injected with motorsport DNA, this dynamic trim level offers specially tuned suspension, a wider track, and aggressive styling elements for spirited drivers who crave performance as much as practicality.
Smarter, Safer, More Connected
The sixth-generation RAV4 marks Toyota’s bold entry into the era of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) with the debut of its Arene software platform, developed by Woven by Toyota. This transformative system allows for continual over-the-air updates, enabling your RAV4 to grow smarter and safer over time.
The new multimedia system is faster, more intuitive, and fully customisable. Enhanced voice recognition means natural, conversational commands are now the norm. The digital experience is complemented by the latest Toyota Safety Sense suite, which now includes:
- Emergency Driving Stop System: Automatically brings the car to a safe halt if the driver becomes unresponsive
- Enhanced Acceleration Suppression: Reduces the risk of sudden, unintended acceleration
- Regular updates to safety features and user experiences, keeping the RAV4 future-ready
Global Adventure, Local Launch Coming Soon
The sixth-generation Toyota RAV4 will be rolled out in over 180 countries, including South Africa, where it continues to enjoy a loyal following. Local specifications and pricing will be confirmed closer to launch, but one thing is certain: with this latest evolution, the RAV4 is poised to remain a benchmark in its segment — combining electrified efficiency, everyday usability, and the unshakable promise of adventure.
